Blacksmithing: The changing colors of forging steel

This is a blacksmithing video where I show you steel as it heats in the forge. Steel changes color as it heats and this is a very important property for blacksmiths. It tells the blacksmithing what temperature the steel is and what can be done with it. There are two color ranges that a smith looks for and in this video I show you these ranges and why they are important. At the hotter temperatures the steel can be shaped and worked. But the cooler temperatures are also very important because at these colors the steel takes on properties that are very desirable for the eventual use of the item whether it be a knife, a sword, a saw, a hammer, or some type of tool.
