Mammoths are an extinct species of elephant. Mammoths originally came from Africa and later colonised Europe, Asia and North America. The last representatives of the mammoths were woolly mammoths and only became extinct around 4000 years ago.
Mammoths were very large mammals that had an elephant-like physique with a large head and columnar legs. Their size varied from species to species. The well-known woolly mammoth reached a shoulder height of 2.8 to 3.7 metres and thus corresponded to that of elephants living today, weighing between 5 and 8 tonnes. However, many other species could grow quite large, for example the prairie mammoth and the southern elephant reached a shoulder height of up to 4.2 metres and weighed a good 12 tonnes. The largest mammoth species, however, was the steppe mammoth, which grew up to 4.5 metres tall and weighed an estimated 15 tonnes. There were also smaller mammoth species, such as the Crete dwarf mammoth, which was only 1.1 metres tall and weighed around 310 kg. Mammoths were hunted by prehistoric humans. Sabre-toothed tigers also hunted these beautiful animals.
