I was looking into Helena Hurricane Relief and FEMA, which brought me to Katrina horror stories, which then ruined my day.

TIL 200,000 to 600,000 pets were estimated to have been left behind in the evacuations from hurricane Katrina, as people were not allowed to take pets with them and pets were not allowed in sheltering places. https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/14b8g54/til_200000_to_600000_pets_were_estimated_to_have/
TIL that during Katrina, people and their pets were evacuated to schools in St. Bernard Parish. Law enforcement then ordered them to evacuate and leave their pets behind. They were told that the animals would be rescued. Instead they were shot and left to die. (WARNING: last half is very graphic.) https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/17k9oi/til_that_during_katrina_people_and_their_pets/
TIL 44% of the people who didn't evacuate for Hurricane Katrina stayed because they didn't want to abandon their pets, this prompted major changes to state and federal laws regarding the evacuation of pets during disasters. https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/3ix232/til_44_of_the_people_who_didnt_evacuate_for/
