Talking to us about his role in The Radleys, Billions star Damian Lewis finally weighs in on those Green Goblin fan casts and reveals whether he’s ever met with Marvel Studios or Warner Bros./DC.
Damian Lewis is one of the most talented actors working today – look no further than Billions and Homeland for proof of that – and, for several years now, he’s been a fan-favourite choice to play Spider-Man villain the Green Goblin.
Fan art of the actor as Norman Osborn can be found all over social media. Even after Willem Dafoe’s memorable Spider-Man: No Way Home return, Lewis remains at the top of many wishlists when it comes to who should play a new variant of the iconic comic book baddie.
Earlier this week, we sat down with the actor to discuss his role in the must-see new horror/comedy The Radleys. While we had Lewis on the line, we wondered if he was aware of the fan casts and if Marvel or DC had ever come knocking.
Damian Lewis and Kelly Macdonald are sinking their teeth into a strange suburban lifestyle.
PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer for The Radleys, which stars Lewis, 53, and Macdonald, 48, as parents Peter and Helen Radley who happen to also be vampires — and must reveal their family's secret to their teens.
The trailer teases audiences by showing the characters' daughter Clara (Bo Bragason) fending off threatening advances from a boy in the woods. To her own surprise, she kills him and feeds on his blood.
After the death, the parents reveal to Clara and son Rowan (Harry Baxendale) that the whole family are vampires who try to live normal lives, and Lewis' character calls his estranged brother Will (also played by Lewis) to help their daughter avoid the authorities.

According to a synopsis, the Radleys are "a seemingly average suburban family with a juicy secret: they are vampires."
"In the light of day, the Radleys might seem normal, but they can only abstain from their natural cravings for so long until the bloody truth bubbles to the surface and turns their quiet country life upside down."

The new movie is directed by Euros Lyn, a television director known for his work on Heartstopper who last released a film with 2015's The Library Suicides. Talitha Stevenson wrote the screenplay, based on a novel by Matt Haig.
For Lewis, The Radleys marks his first movie role since the end of his series Billions in 2023. He most recently appeared on the big screen in 2020's Dream Horse. The movie's cast also includes Jay Lycurgo, Siân Phillips and Shaun Parkes.
The Radleys is in theaters, on demand and on digital Oct. 4.
Based on the novel by Matt Haig, “The Radleys” is a vampire horror comedy that can’t quite figure out its tone, so more often than not, it ends up in a lukewarm middle ground. The British production stars Damian Lewis and Kelly Macdonald as Peter and Helen Radley, bloodsucking parents in recovery, whose suburban normalcy can only cover for their hidden natures (and for their children’s burgeoning vampirism) for so long.
When their teenage daughter Clara (Bo Bragason) discovers her true self — in an uncomfortable scene of sexual violence turned on its head — the duo calls in Peter’s punk rock twin brother Will (also played by Lewis) for assistance, given his “active” vampire status. The characters usually refer to vampirism as a “family disease,” citing inherited cravings that alter their behavior and introducing a substance abuse metaphor in the process. Meanwhile, the couple’s gay son Rowan (Harry Baxendale) lusts quietly after his handsome neighbor Evan (Jay Lycurgo), setting up a further double entendre about vampires living in secret being akin to queer folks in the closet. However, these vague thematic allusions are about the movie’s only truly concise facets.

Right from its opening scenes, “The Radleys” is presented with an unobtrusive visual plainness, which never evolves, and often manifests as a lack of energy. The camera and editing seldom keep up with Keefus Ciancia’s genuinely propulsive and exciting score, creating an immediate disconnect between image and sound that can be hard to look past, further exacerbated by the dialogue. For instance, Rowan’s voiceover and observations made by neighbors refer to Clara as exceptionally pale, but there’s little discernible difference between her and the movie’s other white characters.
Popular on Variety
These malformed moments are practically endless. Evan’s father Jared (Shaun Parkes) has paranoid suspicions that the Radleys may be vampires, but his reasons are unclear since the family goes to great lengths to keep their identity a secret. The film’s patchwork use of vampire lore results in just as much confusion, since it pulls from some existing tropes (mind control, invitations to enter, an aversion to garlic) while randomly discarding others (a lack of reflection and burning up in the sunlight), but never meaningfully establishes its parameters, despite taking for granted its audience’s familiarity with modern vampire media. The aforementioned ideas are only set up right before they need to be paid off, resulting in fleeting referential comedy and only momentary drama.
The actors all put in tremendous effort, but the script doesn’t serve their talents. Lewis’ double duty as a buttoned-up doctor and his more free-spirited twin is imbued with just enough contrast to work. Of the entire cast, only Macdonald seems to truly tap into the addiction subtext, providing a messy and captivating performance that feels like it could fly off the rails at any moment. However, her immense restraint isn’t afforded a release valve at any point, causing her character to plateau.
Watching “The Radleys” yields disappointment after disappointment. It’s never scary, it seldom portrays a wider world outside its central household and its only laughs come from Lewis’ exaggerated reaction shots when Peter is exposed to blood. However, given the movie’s otherwise muted naturalism, it’s hard to tell if this was intended. For a movie steeped in familiar genre hallmarks, it lacks any spark of mischief or intrigue, and more often than not, it zig-zags away from nearly all the subplots it manages to establish. What vampirism means to any of its characters seems to change on a whim, whether the adults who slowly lose control or the adolescents in the throngs of personal discovery. What potential the movie has is quickly squandered.

Well, I “met” The Radleys more than a year ago when we first found out that Damian would star in a supernatural black comedy adapted from Matt Haig’s Sunday Times and New York Times Bestseller “The Radleys”. I listened to the audio book (read by Toby Leonard Moore aka Bryan Connerty from Billions!) first and then read the paperback.
The Radleys is seemingly an ordinary suburban family. They live at 17 Orchard Lane in the village of Bishopthorpe, Yorkshire. Peter Radley is an overworked general practitioner. His wife Helen is an amateur artist who paints apple trees in watercolor. Their marriage has got distant over the years. Peter and Helen have two teenage children who attend the local high school. Rowan, their 17 year old son, suffers from rashes and chronic insomnia and reads Lord Byron. Clara, their 15 year old daughter, has recently become a vegan with the hopes of having animals treat her better.
Meet Peter and Helen Radley!
Despite their best efforts to live like the next family, The Radleys are perceived to be “a little odd” by their fellow villagers. The family has their curtains closed at all times. They love their meat almost raw but choke on garlic. The amount of factor 60 sunscreen Rowan uses on his skin is off the charts. Clara is extremely pale and fragile. The Radley children are called freaks and bullied at school.
Now, this “little odd” family has a huge secret: they are vampires! Only Peter and Helen know about it. The couple became abstainers, vampires who choose not to drink blood despite their natural cravings, when they decided to start a family and they agreed it was best to keep the truth from their children. But they are forced to share the secret with them after Clara has a very strange experience! And as uncle Will, a practicing vampire with quite a hedonistic lifestyle, arrives in the village, nothing will be the same for the Radleys ever again…
Damian Lewis as the practicing vampire Uncle Will in The Radleys
Talitha Stevenson has adapted the script for the big screen. The film is a Genesius Pictures production, produced by Debbie Gray with Damian Lewis as an executive producer through his Ginger Biscuit Entertainment. Cornerstone Media is handling the worldwide sales. They filmed the movie in London and Yorkshire in the summer of 2023. And I believe I met Uncle Will in person that summer… I will share my story at the end of this post 🙂
Damian Lewis is playing twin brothers Peter and Will Radley in The Radleys. Kelly MacDonald is playing Peter’s wife Helen, the character that I think holds the book together. I am actually wondering if this could be the project Damian and Helen were originally planning to do together which Helen talked about on her instant classic Desert Island Discs. I remember they always wanted to do a comedy together. And, for many reasons, a black comedy with a family of four living in a quiet town with a huge secret would be the perfect project for them.
Kelly MacDonald as Helen Radley in The Radleys
The production marks a reunion between Euros Lyn and Damian since they worked together on Dream Horse. And Damian playing a dual role in the movie makes The Radleys a double bill for us!
The cast also includes young actors Bo Bragason as Clara, Harry Bexandale as Rowan, and Jay Lycurgo as Evan Copeleigh. In the book, Clara is close friends with Eve Copeleigh, the new girl at school, who has recently moved to Bishopthorpe from Manchester with her dad after a sadness in their family. Rowan is desperately in love with Eve but is too insecure to approach her. It turns out that they have chosen to have the young Copeleigh as a guy in the movie which I think adds more complexity to Rowan’s character – I believe he will have romantic interest in Evan.
Harry Baxendale as Rowan Radley in The Radleys
Shaun Parkes is playing Jared Copeleigh, Evan’s dad. The other notable characters in the book are the Felts – Radleys’ next door neighbors, yet another distant couple. Lorna Felt, who reminds me of Betty Draper in Mad Men, is the epitome of the bored suburban housewife, complete with her sad flirting with Peter who seems to enjoy it. Sophia Di Martino plays Lorna Felt in the movie, and Steven Waddington plays his oblivious husband Mark.
Bo Bragasan as Clara Radley in The Radleys
Julia Stuart, Director of Original Film at Sky comments:
“I’m very excited to watch Matt Haig’s The Radleys come alive on screen as it begins production with top British talent including Damian Lewis and Kelly Macdonald. Wickedly funny and darkly compelling, I’m so pleased to bring this film to Sky Cinema in 2024.”
To be honest with you, I am not a big fan of the vampire genre. In fact, the only movie I walked out of in my whole life is a vampire movie! That said, having read the book twice, I am happy to report that The Radleys is brilliant! Even if the vampire genre is not your cup of tea, certainly not mine, it is still very likely that you will enjoy the story and relate to the characters. It is certainly a fresh take on the vampire genre, and a very witty one at that! Matt Haig does what he always does and takes a dark, quirky take on family life. The book has depth and its dry humor is fantastic.
Peter and Helen Radley repress their dark desires as they try their best to give their two children a normal life. As they are trying so hard to fit into the village life, complete with their white picket fences and boring book clubs, they face middle class social issues like uncommunicative marriage, midlife crisis, bullying, fidelity and conformity. While these human aspects lie at the center of the book, Haig adds vampirism to the story as “blood addiction” so it represents any kind of addiction, drug, alcohol, and what have you, that can ruin a family. Vampirism brings pressure, extra vulnerability to the family and a lot of laughs to the reader.
Here is the first official trailer they dropped just before the World Premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF).
If you are an avid reader, and I am, it is inevitable to notice that Matt Haig has adopted the last name of a major literary character for his vampire family. Boo Radley, a mysterious and reclusive man, lives on the same street with the Finch family in To Kill A Mockingbird. Boo is pictured as a creep by many characters in the book even though they never saw him. In an interview with Publishers Weekly, Matt Haig reveals that he was inspired by Boo to name the vampire family:
“Yes, Boo, pale-faced, misunderstood suburban outsider, was definitely my inspiration, though I later discovered Radley means “of the red meadow,” which can have vampire connotations.”
Note that The Radleys is not the first movie in which we see Damian playing a dual role. He played Jonesy and Mr. Gray, the alien who possesses Jonesy, in Dreamcatcher, a 2003 sci-fi / horror movie based on Stephen King’s 2001 novel of the same name. While not Damian’s best movie, Dreamcatcher is entertaining in its own right. And it is so much fun that while Jonesy speaks with an American accent, when possessed by Mr. Gray, he speaks with a British accent 🙂
Both of Damian’s characters in The Radleys are living extreme lives. Peter Radley, the abstainer, is your average suburban dad. He is an overworked village doctor. His marriage has seen better times, and he is going through a mid-life crisis. While he misses the good old days and cannot help getting excited about his patients’ blood tests, Peter is still trying hard to ignore his instincts, and live by the Abstainer’s Handbook, the self-help manual for abstaining vampires. Every chapter in the book starts with a puritanical quote from the Abstainer’s Handbook. I really hope they have somehow integrated at least a couple of the quotes into the movie. They are hysterically funny!
Uncle Will, on the other hand, is a practicing vampire. Certainly the most colorful character in the book, Will is a bad boy. He is irresponsible, careless, and addicted to blood. Driven by his dark desires, Will has got utterly reckless in the last couple of years that he has been a liability for his fellow vampires. And it goes without saying Will has zero interest in fitting in when he arrives in Bishopthorpe in his old camper van!
And you know what? I think I met Will Radley last summer!!! 😀
When I caught up with Damian at his Rough Trade East in June 2023, I had my question ready for him:
“So, Damian, the talk of the town is… THIS…”
I say, pointing to the tattoo on his chest…
“Is it real or is it a Will Radley tattoo?”
Damian’s first reaction:
“I was very drunk Saturday night…”
Then he laughs and says:
As my Twitter friend Anabel Stark rightly pointed out the tattoo seems to have been made to look old. So… hello, Will! Look at that, he does not only have tattoos, but also has a hickey on the neck…
…so, believe me, it is a miracle that I made it out of that photo booth alive!
I cannot wait to have The Radleys on the big screen. I know I will applaud, when I see 17 Orchard Lane on the screen, as hard as I did when I saw 4 Privet Drive at the movies 😀 And I am green with envy that some lucky ones among us already saw it at EIFF! Watch this space and damian-lewis.com for updates. And, in the meantime, hear”Suck My Blood” the song that The Radleys inspired Damian to write… I wonder if Damian, ahem, Will sings it in the movie 🙂
Can a family hide their biggest secret? “The Radleys” follows one household facing a unique challenge, vampirism. It’s only a matter of time before the customary urges take over. This seemingly idyllic family is facing an unenviable choice. Giving in could mean the end of everything they’ve worked for while immense hunger could lead to their demise. The upcoming film — described as a dark comedy thriller — hails from director Euros Lyn and screenwriter Talitha Stevenson. Lyn has helmed episodes of “Torchwood,” “Sherlock,” “Broadchurch,” and “Happy Valley.”

‘Radleys’ features a notable pair of actors as its beleaguered suburban parents. Damian Lewis and Kelly Macdonald star as the special couple looking for normality. Lewis is a critically acclaimed actor who won an Emmy for his performance on “Homeland.” Macdonald also has an extensive film and TV background, winning her own Emmy for “The Girl in the Café.” Harry Baxendale, Bo Bragason, Jay Lycurgo, Siân Phillips, and Shaun Parkes round out the project’s cast.
The film’s official synopsis:
“Award-winning actors Kelly Macdonald (No Country For Old Men) and Damian Lewis (“Billions,” Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood) star in a dark comedy thriller about a seemingly average suburban family with a juicy secret: they are vampires. In the light of day, the Radleys might seem normal, but they can only abstain from their natural cravings for so long until the bloody truth bubbles to the surface and turns their quiet country life upside down.”

What's more delightful than one Damian Lewis (Billions) performance? Two Damian Lewis performances, of course, and for his upcoming dark comedy film, The Radleys, we get a double treat of the actor who plays twin brothers Paul and Will, the former being the patriarch of a suburban middle-class family struggling to keep his animalistic tendencies repressed. The film recently made its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and is now headed for theaters this fall. Ahead of its release, Sky Cinema has released a trailer for the film, introducing the rest of us to the complex family dynamics at play within the Radley home.
Adapted from a novel of the same name by Matt Haig, The Radleys centers on the titular family, who pretend to be just an ordinary family as they are harbouring a bloody secret. They are vampires who, rather than give in to the craving for human blood, choose sobriety. For years, the family has done a nice job of unsuspiciously living a regular life until an unexpected occurrence at school involving their teenage daughter, Clara, threatens their exposure. Clara's vampiric side is activated when she gets into a fight at school that leads to the death of a boy. When her brother Rowan also begins to develop beastly traits, the kids approach their parents for explanation and Peter and his wife Helen are forced to confess their dark secret.
"We have a family disease," Peter tells their visibly perplexed kids in the trailer. "It makes you vulnerable to certain cravings," wife Helen adds. Peter soon abandons his failing attempt at information management and blurts: "We're vampires, we all are," much to Rowan's surprise, who asks if that is a metaphor, to which Peter replies "It's plain biological truth." Things get much more complicated with the arrival of Peter's twin Will who unlike the rest of the family stays true to his real self, indulging in blood-feasting with reckless abandon. With a neighbor hot on their trail and the kids struggling even more to suppress their thirst for blood, Peter is forced to ask for Will's help, which might just be a terrible decision.
Who Else Stars In 'The Radleys'?
Emmy and Golden Globe winner Damian Lewis is joined by another celebrated talent, Kelly Macdonald (No Country for Old Men) who, herself, is a recipient of numerous accolades, including a BAFTA Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award. Newcomers Harry Baxendale and Bo Bragason play the kids Rowan and Clara, respectively. The cast also includes Sophia Di Martino (Loki) and Shaun Parkes (The Mummy Returns).
The Radleys is directed by Welsh filmmaker Euros Lyn, (Dream Horse). Talitha Stevenson penned the screenplay, which was developed by Jo Brand. Debbie Gray produced for Genesius Pictures, while Lewis doubled as executive producer.
The Radleys will show in UK cinemas starting October 18th, right on time for Halloween, but a US release has not yet been set. Check out the trailer above.
