Joker: Folie à Deux BOMBS | The Cost of Subverting Expectations

Joker: Folie à Deux is having a rough start during its opening weekend and right now it’s all but certain the film will be a financial loss for Warner Bros.

The first film was wildly successful, generating over $1 billion globally on a $65 million budget. Director Todd Phillips took the sequel in a wildly different direction by creating a Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga led musical that attempts to undo what the first movie created. This last week it has been discussed whether studios should listen to fans with some thinking that’s akin to negotiating with terrorists, but the success of Joker and failure of Joker: Folie à Deux lends evidence to the argument that fans know better.
