The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has a proud history in the UK. It was a driving force behind some of the most significant events in British national history; three national miners' strikes in the early 1970s and early 1980s.

The NUM was strongly supported by the British Labour Party and gave an enormous amount back to its local communities throughout its heyday. Its fight for fairer pay, better working conditions and safety in coal mines is remembered as one of Britain's greatest collective actions.
