After the 1999 election, during which Indo-Fijian Mahendra Chaudhry became the Prime Minister, a mutineer coup leader named George Speight seized control of the Fijian parliament. He held Mahendra Chaudhry hostage and demanded changes to the Fijian constitution, as well as the removal of any non-ethnic Fijians from parliament. This coup persisted from May 2000 to March 2001, resulting in a ten-month standoff between Speight and the army.
