Marines conduct a show of force mission, the Modern Day Marine Military Expo is held,
This week on the Corps Report.

The Women Marines Association and the Marine Corps Association have joined forces to celebrate
the centennial of women serving in the Corps. From 1918 to present, women have proudly served this
great Nation. Join us in honoring the bravery, accomplishments, and service of the women who have
worn and continue to wear the United States Marine Corps uniform.
The contest theme is the Significance of Women Who Began Serving Officially in Uniform 100 Years
Ago in the United States Marine Corps. Contest entrants have great latitude in their submission as
long as the essay corresponds to the contest theme. The essay could address a specific woman Marine
and how her accomplishments paved the way for other women and contributed greatly to the Corps'
mission or a specific era. It could compare and contrast certain aspects of women in Marine Corps
history over the past 100 years. The essay could also discuss how women Marines' accomplishments
have led to new challenges and efforts for the Marine Corps to open new occupational specialties or
opportunities as part of the Marine Corps Forces today.
Prizes: 1st - $500 and plaque, 2nd - $250 and plaque, 3rd - $150 and plaque
Contest Criteria:
- Contest is open to all who have earned the Eagle Globe and Anchor. Marines who are serving or
who have served in any capacity in the United States Marine Corps may submit an essay.
- Essay should be between 500 - 750 words, Times New Roman, 12 pitch and double-spaced.
- Essay must correspond with contest theme.
- Essay will be evaluated based on historical accuracy, originality, use of language, and
appropriateness to contest theme.
- Please include the following in the byline of your essay: Name, rank at separation, MOS, years
you served (i.e. 1943 – 1947 or 2015 to present), email, and phone number.
- Electronically submitted entries are preferred.
- Attach the entry as a Word document file and send to Convention@womenmarines.org.
- Articles will be published in various medium leading up to the 30th Biennial Women Marines
Association Convention and Professional Development Symposium – August 2018.
- Essays will become the property of the Women Marines Association and the Marine Corps
Association.
- Winners will be individually notified of the results by phone or e-mail.
- Questions pertaining to the essay contest should be sent to convention@womenmarines.org.
- Must be received by December 15, 2017.
