Catching Spanish Mackerel Off the Jetties

Spanish Mackerel start moving up Florida during the spring, often before the larger King Mackerel. We are fishing for Spanish Mackerel today at the jetties of Mayport inlet. We are trolling for these fish using a combination of Gotcha plugs and Clark 00 trolling spoons in both silver and gold. Our trolling speed is between 4 and 5 mph. I like to troll with 4 or 5 lines. The two off the transom have #1 planers in front of the lure to get it down deeper. The others are run off each side of the boat, often with a 1 to 3 ounce sinker in front to keep them under the water. These fish will often be around birds or off the tip of the jetty where the deeper water of the inlet comes up to the shallower water just outside the inlet. Watch your depth recorder to find schools of bait and then troll around these fish. Once you find the mackerel, you can often cast to them and catch them as well!
