Intense conflict is not new to Israel; the state’s first significant conflict commenced less than 24 hours after its modern founding. At midnight on May 15th, 1948, Israel was attacked from all sides. Despite being heavily outnumbered by Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, Israel prevailed against all odds to become a nation once again.

Oct. 7th marks the one-year anniversary since Hamas brutally attacked Israel, which has been called the darkest day in their history. Earlier this week, Iran stepped out from behind their proxies, directly sending a barrage of 200 ballistic missiles toward Israel.

In this episode of The Weekend Spectator podcast, hosts Paul Kengor and Grace Reilly discuss the history of conflict, including the Yom Kippur War, the Six-Day War, the Abraham Accords, and the Crusades — bringing us to today’s current escalations.

Paul and Grace offer interesting insights into the conflict. Paul teaches a Middle Eastern Politics course at Grove City College, and Grace spent time in Israel in May 2023.
