"When you're stuck in life, you need to do something irrevocable." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a romantic drama titled Lonely Planet, arriving for streaming on Netflix worldwide this fall. I guess the title is inspired by all those guide books? Yet another entry in the ongoing trend of films where an older woman falls for a hot young guy – there's already been a bunch of these in 2024 alone. A reclusive novelist arrives at a prestigious writer's retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer's block. While there, she meets a young man — what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair. Of course it does. More insight: "Katherine has spent her life dedicated to narrative and therefore [hasn’t spent] much time looking at deep truth within... She is at a turning point in her life where she is looking for a softening and deeper understanding, and she finds it in a love story." Laura Dern stars with Liam Hemsworth as her hunky young beau, along with Diana Silvers, Younès Boucif, Adriano Giannini, and Rachida Brakni. As expected, this looks extra steamy and intimate, a delectable fantasy.

Here's the first official trailer for Susannah Grant's film Lonely Planet, direct from Netflix's YouTube:

A reclusive novelist named Katherine (Laura Dern) arrives at a writer's retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer's block. While staying there, she meets a young man — what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair. Laura Dern adds: "What drew me to the story was the exploration of identity and self-worth within relationships, especially in a world as intellectually charged as the literary scene. The dynamic between the younger man and the older, established writer intrigued me because it's not just about romance, it's about finding someone who truly sees and understands you, which is something deeply human and relatable." Lonely Planet is directed by acclaimed screenwriter / filmmaker Susannah Grant, director of the film Catch and Release (2006) and a few episodes of the series "Unbelievable" recently; she also wrote The Soloist, The 5th Wave, Confirmation, and the "Unbelievable" series. Produced by Liza Chasin, Susannah Grant, Sarah Timberman. Netflix will debut Lonely Planet streaming on Netflix worldwide starting October 11th, 2024 this fall. Look any good?

All the rage at the moment in film, the May-December romance is also on display in Babygirl, Halina Reijn’s follow-up to Bodies Bodies Bodies, which is coming off of screenings at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. Starring Dern’s Big Little Lies co-star Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson, that film hits theaters via A24 on December 25. Lonely Planet and Babygirl are coming to viewers on the heels of Todd Haynes dark comedy May December, a Netflix title starring Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman and Charles Melton, which nabbed a number of Oscar and Golden Globe nominations after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. Laura Dern is getting into the Netflix rom-com game after her “Big Little Lies” co-star Nicole Kidman made her streamer debut with “A Family Affair.”

Dern leads the upcoming Netflix feature “Lonely Planet,” hailing from rom-com master Susannah Grant who previously penned “In Her Shoes,” “28 Days,” and “Ever After: A Cinderella Story.” Grant is best known for writing “Erin Brockovich.” She also wrote and directed “Catch and Release,” “Lessons in Chemistry,” and partnered with Netflix on co–creating “Unbelievable.”

“Lonely Planet” stars Dern in an “Under the Tuscan Sun”-esque premise, swapping continents from Europe instead for Africa. Liam Hemsworth plays Dern’s boy toy turned soulmate, it seems.

The official synopsis reads: “A reclusive novelist (Dern) arrives at a prestigious writer’s retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer’s block. While there, she meets a young man (Hemsworth) and what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.”

Diana Silvers, Younès Boucif, Adriano Giannini, and Rachida Brakni round out the cast.

Writer/director Grant produces along with Liza Chasin and Sarah Timberman. Brendan Ferguson, Corinne Weber, and Margaret Chernin serve as executive producers.

Dern recently executive produced and starred in “Palm Royale.” She told IndieWire that it was a “dream” come true to “help support a project that would then give artists and female actors a great time to invent” with the series.

She added, “Your collaborators, every single one of them, make radical and valuable investments in the stories you create and in the comedy you create. […] To witness working in a happy place for artists was a gorgeous thing. To be part of feeling like I was one of many people facilitating that opportunity, that felt incredible.”

Dern most likely will also return to “Big Little Lies” for the long-rumored third season, which Kidman confirmed is in the works.

“Just you wait!” Kidman said during a Vanity Fair interview alongside former co-star Reese Witherspoon. “We’re moving fast and furious. And Liane is delivering the book. And we’re in good shape. So the rest is…We need to shut up because there’s this whole thing that you should never talk about something until you’ve done it. Because if you talk about doing it, it’s the dopamine hit of doing it. You feel like you’ve done it. It’s a scientific study.”

“Lonely Planet” premieres October 11 on Netflix. Check out the trailer below.

Hemsworth, 34, agrees. "The story is not just about the romance between two people; it’s about personal growth, self-discovery and the complexities of relationships. The characters are relatable, flawed and navigating the beauty and challenges of love in a setting that’s visually stunning and culturally rich."

The trailer only offers brief moments in which Owen is shown to be frustrated with his girlfriend, while most of the footage emphasizes the emotionally intimate bond he develops with Katherine. Even though there could be surprises and turbulent drama where Owen and his girlfriend are concerned, Lonely Planet appears to be more interested in a thoughtful and hopeful exploration of how two lonely individuals, Katherine and Owen, find exactly what they need. This ties into what Katherine says about the small place each individual occupies in the larger world.

Our Take On Lonely Planet's Trailer
It's A Compelling Departure From Dern & Hemsworth's Other Netflix Roles
Lonely Planet is an intriguing film for Dern and Hemsworth, especially considering their past and future involvement with other Netflix projects. Dern's performance as divorce lawyer Nora Fanshaw in Marriage Story won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, while Hemsworth has been recast as The Witcher's Geralt of Rivia. Lonely Planet's seemingly optimistic romantic story is a stark juxtaposition from Marriage Story's tension and The Witcher's dark fantasy, allowing Dern and Hemsworth to further showcase their talents. The focus on heartfelt romance over contrived drama is also promising, making Lonely Planet a Netflix film well worth watching.
