Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose is taking over the kitchen in horror-thriller film “House of Spoils.”

DeBose stars as a chef who is tormented by an otherworldly force while trying to open a restaurant. “Euphoria” alum Barbie Ferreira stars as Lucia, another chef on staff, and “Succession” actor Arian Moayed plays Andreas, DeBose’s onscreen business partner.

The official synopsis reads: “An ambitious chef (DeBose) as she opens a restaurant on a remote estate where she battles kitchen chaos, crushing self doubts…and a haunting presence who threatens to sabotage her at every turn.”

Amara Karan, Mikkel Bratt Silset, and Marton Csokas co-star.

The film is from Amazon MGM and Blumhouse Television and will have its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2024.

“House of Spoils” is written and directed by “Blow the Man Down” filmmakers Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy. The duo told Elle that the film was inspired by the “torment and growth of becoming a leader and trying to find your voice, which is essentially what we think this movie is about.”

“We found that we really connected with the chef’s journey as leaders and finding their voice,” Krudy said.

DeBose told the outlet that she even trained at elite restaurants in New York City to prepare for the film.

“When I read the script, I was fascinated by the idea of a character with no name. Chef, defined by her work — how many women, everybody really, can relate to that idea at one point in their lives?” DeBose said. “I trained in New York City for about a week with chef Ayesha Nurdjaja of Shukette (which is an amazing spot, by the way). It was terrifying, but I had a blast! She gave me a good jumpstart! Dang, can she run a kitchen!”

And according to co-director Savage Cole, DeBose had no problem fully immersing herself in the role.

“This was a challenging shoot,” Savage Cole said. “It was like she’s in every scene. It’s dirty, it’s nasty. Some of these sets, we literally had her crawling in dirt over and over again one night and there was a lot we asked of her.”

“House of Spoils” is produced by Greg Gilreath, Adam Hendricks, Drew Houpt, Alex Scharfman, Lucas Joaquin, and Jason Blum. Savage Cole, Krudy, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold, and Chris Dickie executive produce.

“House of Spoils” premieres October 3 on Prime Video. Check out the trailer below.

Prime Video has dropped the official trailer for House of Spoils, a fresh horror thriller from Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse. The film, starring Oscar winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), will be available for streaming exclusively on Prime Video starting October 3.

Ariana DeBose joins the cast of Ke Huy Quan’s ‘With Love’

In House of Spoils, DeBose plays an ambitious chef who opens her first restaurant on a remote estate, only to face more than just kitchen chaos. As she grapples with self-doubt and the pressures of running a restaurant, a malevolent force — haunting the estate and seemingly tied to the restaurant’s former owner — threatens to sabotage her every move.

The film is written and directed by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, known for their previous work on Blow the Man Down. Joining DeBose in the cast are Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria), Arian Moayed (Succession), and Marton Csokas (Lord of the Rings), among others.

House of Spoils marks the latest collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse Productions, continuing their partnership that began in 2019. Producers include Greg Gilreath, Adam Hendricks, and Jason Blum, with food stylist Zoe Hegedus (Midsommar) consulting on the film’s kitchen sequences.
Ariana DeBose stars as a gourmet chef with a haunting, food spoilage problem in the trailer for House of Spoils. As DeBose opens up her first restaurant as head chef, she gathers fresh herbs and other plants, despite a neighbor’s warnings to not eat anything from the previous owner’s garden. Soon, mold coats her meals, and a creepy-crawly escapes from a dining guest’s dish. The horror-thriller premieres on Oct. 3 via Prime Video.

“It was hot,” DeBose says, after swatting a bug from a guest’s plate.

House of Spoils, a Blumhouse film, follows a chef who “battles kitchen chaos, a dubious investor, and self doubt,” a synopsis reads, all while the previous owner of the estate where the restaurant is located threatens to sabotage her eatery. Directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy told Elle that the film chronicles the “torment and growth of becoming a leader and trying to find your voice.” Cole added that DeBose didn’t hesitate to get into character.

“This was a challenging shoot,” Cole added. “It was like she’s in every scene. It’s dirty, it’s nasty. Some of these sets, we literally had her crawling in dirt over and over again one night and there was a lot we asked of her.”

Earlier this year, DeBose hosted the Tony Awards, which she’s helmed for the past three years. In 2023, she hosted an unscripted, off-the-cuff show amid the writers’ strike, which included a wordless, acrobatic, dance number. DeBose is also known for her acting roles in West Side Story, Hamilton, Wish, and Argylle.
