Najaf is famous principally for 3 thins:
1 -the shrine of imam ali pbuh
2- wadi as salam which is the worlds largest cemetery
3- The Najaf Hawza is one of the oldest islamic seminaries in the world.

najaf is located 30 km (19 mi) south of the ancient city of Babylon which is mentioned in the holy bible in Genesis to explain the existence of different human languages.

Pope Francis visited Najaf to meet with Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani and together they released a joint statement against religious extremism and peaceful co-existence.

imam Ali pbuh instructed that his burial place should remain a secret, as he had many enemies and he feared that his body might be subjected to some indignity.
so his body was placed on a camel which was driven from Kufah and it stopped a few miles west of the city where the body was secretly buried with No raised tomb and nobody knew of the burial place except for a few trusted people.

after 100 years the Abbasid Caliph, Harun al-Rashid, went deer hunting outside Kufah, and the deer sought sanctuary at a place where the hounds would not pursue it. On inquiry as to why the place was a sanctuary, he was told that it was the burial place of imam Ali pbuh. Harūn ar-Rashīd ordered a mausoleum to be built on the spot and in due course the town of Najaf grew around the mausoleum.

Imam Ali ibn abu talib pbuh is the 4th sunni caliph and first shia imam.
he was the cousin and son-in-law of prophet Mohammad pbuh.
his wife is Bibi Fatima pbuh, leader of the women of paradise.
his 2 children are the leaders of the youths of paradise - imam hasan pbuh & imam hussain pbuh

Imam Ali (pbuh) says:
هَلَكَ فِيَّ رَجُلَانِ مُحِبٌّ غَالٍ وَ مُبْغِضٌ قَالٍ
"Two kinds of people will be damned on my account Those who form exaggerated opinion about me and those who under-estimate me because they hate me."

Any day on which you don’t commit sins or disobey Allah is a day of celebration (Eid).

within Imam Ali pbuh's grave are the graves of Prophet Adam pbuh & prophet Nuh pbuh.

within imam ali pbuh's shrine is the location where imam hussain pbuh's head was buried previously as well as the graves of various companions and scholars.

Imam ‘Ali (as) First in many Fields
1. He was the only man to be born in the Kabah (The house of God)

2. He was the first to offer homage to the Holy Prophet (PBUH&HF)

3. He was the first to offer prayers after the Holy Prophet (PBUH&HF)

4. He was the first to offer his services for Jihad.

5. He was the first to receive religious instructions from the Holy Prophet (PBUH&HF)

6. He was the first to compile and codify the Quran

7. He was the first to be styled as "brother" by the Prophet (PBUH&HF) and on every occasion

8. He was the first to give burial to the Prophet (PBUH&HF)

9. He was the first to offer to sleep in the Prophet's (PBUH&HF) bed on the night of his emigration to Medina
