The Autumn / Antonio Vivaldi / The Four Seasons / 4K Video

The first Allegro is a rustic dance. The three-bar head motive reflects the spirit of a peasant tune. The solo violin takes up the motive in double stops accompanied by the basso continuo. The tribute paid to Bacchus, during which relative sequences are allowed to develop, is evoked by the second entrance of the solo violin, which modulates to G minor. The ‘drunk one” and the “drunk ones” are the tags of these particular passages. The ubriaco (‘drunk one’) falls asleep under the effect of the wine while the other villagers continue to dance and to sing. |

The Adagio bears the heading: “Sleeping drunkards”. Thus Vivaldi handles the situation with imagination and humor. There are no solo passages and dynamics are limited to piano, pitt piano, and pianissimo.

The last movement is entitled “The Hunt”. The headmotive is a hunting call with the typical “horn fifths”. The simplicity of the first solo section is cast aside in the second in favor of virtuosity. Then the pace quickens. The hunters are chasing the game, which succumbs in the last solo passage. Then the horns sound the death-halloo (head motive).
