Snow, wind and cold constitute the topics illustrated in the first movement, which lacks a single lyrical phrase. The composer avoided melody in order to maintain the bleak mood expressed in the poem. In the Largo in E flat major Vivaldi reverts in style to the Arioso type. The solo violin dominates from beginning to end. Commencing with a solo and containing four solo and four tutti segments, the finale is somewhat irregularly constructed. It lacks a recurring main theme, but displays variety in the use of the sonorities. To depict the battle between Sirocco, Borea and other winds familiar to the Venetians, Vivaldi uses only demi-semiquavers which fill the last 38 bars with runs and tremolos.
