The series is set in 1991 Miami and follows a young Dexter (Patrick Gibson) “as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. The show is currently in production in Los Angeles on its 10-episode debut season. In addition to Phillips and Hall, executive producers include Scott Reynolds (Jessica Jones), Mary Leah Sutton (Resident Evil), Tony Hernandez (Emily in Paris) and Lilly Burns (Russian Doll), with the series being produced by Robert Lloyd Lewis (The Lincoln Lawyer). Michael Lehmann (Heathers) serves as directing executive producer.
Dexter: Original Sin has set its premiere for December 13 via streaming and on-demand for Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers and internationally; linear will premiere two days later. Watch the official teaser trailer above.

“I’m a killer but I wasn’t born this way; I was made,” TV’s original Dexter, Michael C. Hall, says in a voiceover in the clip. Hall will narrate the inner monologue inside the serial killer-in-training’s head in the prequel.

The teaser trailer really sets the vibe for Dexter’s origin story with all the funkiest elements of the 1990s from the music to the fashion, the furniture, and even the glorious mustache Patrick Dempsey is wearing. Everything old is new again, so don’t be surprised if the era continues to influence fashion trends. Seriously though, nobody needs those brown sofas anymore. They were too itchy.

Premiere date
teaser trailer
The teaser for Dexter: Original Sin offers an early glimpse at the new show. The show is a prequel to Dexter, which starred Michael C. Hall as the titular sociopath and forensic analyst who used his killer instincts to murder dangerous criminals. The upcoming Dexter: Original Sin will follow Dexter, played by Patrick Gibson but still featuring an internal monologue by Hall, in his early days as an intern at the Miami Metro Police Department, featuring a cast that also includes Molly Brown, Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey, James Martinez, Christina Milian, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The official teaser for Dexter: Original Sin has now launched on the Dexter on Paramount+ with Showtime YouTube account. The short video features Hall delivering a monologue about how his identity as a serial killer was "made by the people around me," while the screen shows brief flashes of the core characters from the show including his father Harry (Slater), CSI Chief Tanya Martin (Gellar), and Captain Aaron Spencer (Dempsey). The teaser also reveals that the show is set to premiere on the platform on December 13. See the full video below:

What This Teaser Means For Dexter: Original Sin
Old And New Elements Combine In The Dexter Prequel
Sarah Michelle Gellar as Tanya Looking Serious in Dexter Original Sin
The new teaser does not offer too much insight into the new characters who have never been seen before in the franchise, including Sarah Michelle Gellar's Tanya. However, the monologue implies that every single one of the characters that Dexter meets in the CSI department is instrumental in his development as a serial killer. This may be unintentional on the part of Tanya and Captain Spencer, but that monologue combined with them being featured front and center in the teaser likely means that he will be working closely with them, even as an intern.

Other returning characters in Dexter: Original Sin are Molly Brown's Debra Morgan, originally played by Jennifer Carpenter, Christina Milian's María LaGuerta, originally played by Lauren Vélez, and Alex Shimizu's Vince Masuka, originally played by C. S. Lee.

The other major impression that the teaser gives is that, despite the show's placement in the Dexter timeline, Michael C. Hall will still play a major role in the goings-on. This is in keeping with many modern prequel spinoffs, including the Supernatural prequel The Winchesters, which was narrated by Jensen Ackles, and the Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon, which was narrated by Jim Parsons. It remains to be seen if Hall ever makes an onscreen appearance like Parsons' cameo in the Young Sheldon finale, but it seems that his narration will continue to be integral to the show.

Our Take On The Dexter: Original Sin Teaser
Dexter Is Coming Into His Own As A Killer
Christian Slater as Harry Confronting Patrick Gibson as Dexter Next to a Building in Dexter Original Sin
What the monologue implies is that the version of the title character seen at the beginning of Dexter: Original Sin is much more of a blank slate than the version seen in the premiere of the original show. While his development as a killer was explored in that show, the prequel seems set to go into his transformation in much greater detail. This will almost certainly involve much blood and mayhem, which could promise an exciting return to form for the franchise.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is stepping out of her comfort zone for “Dexter: Original Sin.” The actor will play Tanya Martin in the upcoming prequel series, the forensics expert at the Miami Metro Police Department, Dexter Morgan’s new boss.

“I’m the scientist. You believe me as a scientist right? I do science-y things,” she said at Variety’s Studio, presented by Google TV, at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. This is the first time she’ll be working in a police department — but that’s not the only reason it’s so important to her.

“We’re playing in the 90s. I’m used to playing these formidable women and she’s no exception, but she’s almost an even bigger exception because women didn’t run departments in those jobs. They certainly didn’t run the science departments, and they certainly didn’t do it in Miami,” said Gellar. “So you realize she’s gotta be pretty tough to be able to hang with the guys, although it’s great for me. I’m on set all day long and I’m the only girl. It’s actually my dream job!”

It’d be impossible not to point out that it sounds like Tanya would be a fan of another character Gellar played who was “pretty tough” too: Buffy Summers. When it’s brought up, her costars Molly Brown and Patrick Gibson get excited to hear the idea that Tanya watches The WB show after work, but the timing doesn’t quite lineup since “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” didn’t premiere until 1997.

“Not ’til later because this is 91,” she says. “In the future — it depends on how long this goes! Then you’re really in the multi-verse!”

During the interview, the cast spoke about the recent resurgence of “Dexter,” which has topped the Neilsen charts in the last two months. The original series aired on Showtime from 2006 to 2013, followed by “Dexter: New Blood” in 2021, which picked up 10 years after the original finale. During Comic-Con, it was revealed that another sequel series, “Dexter: Resurrection,” will take place in present day, dropping in Summer 2025.

Additionally, it was revealed that “Dexter: Original Sin” will feature original star Michael C. Hall as the narrator. But, it will stand alone, even though it tells the story of how Dexter got to where he was when the world met him in 2006.

“It definitely compliments the original show but it also gives more insight into those characters… even Dexter didn’t know certain things had happened prior to him being born,” said Christian Slater, who portrays Dexter’s father. “It is ‘Dexter,’ but we are in our own universe here so we don’t have to do an imitation of anybody. We’re free to bring to it what we want to bring to it in order to make it original.”

Gellar quipped, “It’s the ‘Dexter’ multi-verse.”

While Gibson, who is portraying the young Dexter, has spent a good amount of time talking with Hall about the role, he’s been figuring out ways to bring his “own kind of flavor” to the part. Plus, Hall says, he’s handed over the reins completely: “This incarnation of Dexter exists before anything I did. It belongs to him — not that he needs me to tell him that.”

“Dexter: Original Sin” is produced by Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios. It will air on Paramount+ With Showtime in December.

Dexter: Original Sin will air in December 2024, and it'll feature a star-studded cast, who will play a mixture of new and original characters in Dexter's origin story. Sarah Michelle Gellar will play CSI Chief, Tanya Martin, who is young Dexter's boss. Gellar will be a special guest star in the first season, and this has many fans speculating about what her actual role could be in the prequel series.

The special guest star in the original Dexter series was usually the main villain of that particular season, and this could be the case for Sarah Michelle Gellar's character in Dexter: Original Sin. However, it could be a misdirection, and she might not be a villain at all. Either way, her recurring role suggests she might not be sticking around for too long. There was no mention of Tanya Martin's character in the original series, and Dexter Morgan was actually doing her former job throughout the original run, which raises questions over why she left her post.

Every season of Dexter introduces a villain of the series, to go head-to-head with Dexter, and they usually end up on his famous kill table, in order to satisfy Harry's code. This could potentially be the case with Dexter's prequel show, with a young Dexter beginning his career as an intern in the forensics department at Miami Metro Homicide. Sarah Michelle Gellar is the special guest star at the center of Dexter: Original Sin and this raises questions over whether she could be the villain of the series.

The special guest star role in Dexter and Dexter: New Blood was more often than not given to the actor portraying the villain in that particular season, and seen as Sarah Michelle Gellar will be Dexter: Original Sin's special guest star, it could point to her being Dexter's nemesis.

From season 3 onwards, Dexter featured a high profile actor in the special guest star role, and they were typically the villains of the season, except for Charlotte Rampling, who was the special guest star in season 8, and portrayed a good character called Evelyn Vogel, who was instrumental in forming Harry's code. Each of these characters meet a grisly end, which has fans speculating that Sarah Michelle Gellar's Tanya Martin could face a similar dark fate in Dexter: Original Sin.

The fact that the majority of these special guest stars were playing villains also backs up the theory that Tanya Martin could be the despicable big bad at the heart of Dexter: Original Sin's debut season. It would be an interesting choice to have Sarah Michelle Gellar portray the villain in Dexter: Original Sin, as her most famous role was portraying the quintessential heroine, Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If Gellar was to play the villain, it would go against type and give the iconic actress the opportunity to play something completely different.

Even if Gellar doesn't play the villain in Dexter: Original Sin, she is likely to meet a brutal end, as special guest stars don't usually stick around for multiple seasons in the Dexter-verse. It is intriguing that Tanya Martin is Dexter's boss in the prequel series, as this could be a source of tension between the characters. Also, the fact that Dexter was doing Tanya Martin's job as CSI Chief throughout the original series, points towards her character leaving in an unceremonious way. Maybe Dexter caught on to some of Tanya's dirty deeds and had to dispose of her, and a bi-product of that was replacing her as the CSI Chief, and progressing his own career.

Another option could be that Sarah Michelle Gellar has only signed on to feature in a recurring role, as her work schedule is simply too busy to commit to being a series regular on Dexter: Original Sin. Also, Gellar is a huge star and wouldn't be classed as a normal guest star, so she has been given the title of 'Special Guest Star', largely to help promote the show by featuring in the opening title sequence. Clyde Phillips and his team of writers may have some very big plans for Gellar's character that could possibly stretch for multiple seasons, and this could see her eventually become a series regular.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, one of three iconic 1990s actors to join Dexter: Original Sin, recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her role as Tanya Martin in the prequel, which is set to premiere in December 2024.

What it was like stepping into the distinct fashion and hairstyles for their characters in this '90s-set series?

"It's funny — I think it's a different '90s than what I knew because I was like, 'I don't remember this hairstyle,'" Gellar says with a laugh. "But I played a teenager in the '90s, not an adult in a business environment, so maybe that is how people dressed in the '90s. Maybe that is how they wore their hair. They wore a lot heavier makeup in the '90s in Miami, oh boy. It's a lot of blue eyeliner and blue mascara. It's a lot of shoulder pads, and I like rocking a good pair of shoulder pads — it's the closest I'll ever get to looking like a linebacker."

Sarah — who admited that she's a "basic b----" for thinking Season 4 is the best season of the original Dexter — says her role is to be the "comic relief" in Dexter: Original Sin.

"It's fun to sort of inadvertently be the character that teaches Dexter everything that he needs to know to really be a good serial killer, but all the while not knowing that you're doing it," she explains.

However, Tanya is not merely a source of amusement—she is also a highly determined woman who has had to overcome challenges to reach her current career position.

"In the early '90s it was very rare to have a female head of a department, let alone a female head of a department at Miami Metro," Gellar says. "So she has to be really tough and a little bit one of the guys to be able to have made it that far and have thick skin."

Gellar enjoyed diving into this role because it's "a completely different type of character" than she's typically played.

"Normally, even though I play a lot of badasses, they always have this very sensitive side," she says. "And I guess she has one too. We're coming into an episode where you'll learn about her love for animals. But she's definitely had to work harder to get where she is than everybody else there."

The actress also revealed that she's "living [her] teenage dream" working on a set with Patrick Dempsey and Christian Slater. "I was talking to my high school best friend the other day, and I was like, 'Could you imagine if someone would've told us when we were in high school that one day I would be spending every day with those two?'" Gellar says with a laugh. "And she was like, 'No, we would never have believed it.' Can't Buy Me Love and Heathers and Pump Up the Volume, I mean, that was my teenage years!"

Since both she and Dempsey and are portraying new characters in the franchise, unlike the others who show up 15 years later in the original series, there’s a strong chance they could eventually find themselves on the receiving end of Dexter's soon-to-be-favorite knife.

"It's Dexter — everybody should be worried," Gellar says. "Even some characters in the first one that you never thought would be victims of his wound up being his victims. So can't ever be too careful on a show like this."
