Why Jet Fighters Drop Flares in the Sky .
141
Jet fighters drop flares as a defensive measure to counter heat-seeking missiles. These missiles are designed to home in on the heat signature of an aircraft, usually from its engines. Flares are bright, hot-burning magnesium or similar compounds that create a hotter heat source than the jet engine. When deployed, the missile is more likely to track the heat from the flare instead of the aircraft, giving the pilot a chance to evade the attack.
This tactic is especially useful in combat situations where adversaries are equipped with infrared-guided missiles. Flares confuse the missile's tracking system, improving the aircraft's chances of survival.
