On the night of Thursday, September 26th, as Hurricane Helene’s storm surge intensified, the Sarasota Police Department’s Marine Unit demonstrated incredible bravery and dedication. At approximately 9 p.m., three of our officers responded to a distress call from a sailboat in peril near Centennial Park/10th Street Boat Ramp. The storm’s fierce winds and rising waters made it nearly impossible to safely assist, but these officers didn’t hesitate to jump into action.

Drenched and battling the elements, our team worked tirelessly to help anchor the sailboat as it rocked violently in the storm. Their swift actions and unwavering resolve helped prevent a disaster, saving lives and securing equipment at great personal risk.

These officers went above and beyond to protect our community, putting themselves in harm’s way to ensure the safety of others. We are incredibly proud of their courage and professionalism. Please join us in thanking these heroes for their selflessness during dangerous conditions.
