❖ Many Christian asylum seekers are exposed to hostility from their Muslim roommates in accommodation. Now a Somali man in Hamburg is accused of attacking his Eritrean roommate with a knife - because he is a Christian. The defendant, however, calls this "complete nonsense".

The crime scene is a small room in an asylum accommodation in the east of Hamburg. There are two narrow beds. They are positioned in the room in such a way that you can watch the person opposite you sleeping. Two cupboards fit on the wall, and a few belongings can be stored there, trousers and sweaters, a winter jacket and sandals, a souvenir from their distant homeland.

Two men lived together here in a community of convenience. A man from Somalia and a man from Eritrea, a Muslim and a Christian. They couldn't choose their roommate, fate threw them together in this accommodation for asylum seekers and the homeless. After just a few grueling weeks, it must have been clear to both of them: only one would be able to stay.

If you listen to the brief indictment, the roles are clearly assigned: Amir M., the Muslim from Somalia, is said to have threatened his Eritrean roommate Hagos W. because of his Christian faith. The public prosecutor reports a simmering argument and the words: "You are a Christian, I will kill you."

When his opponent was asleep, the Somali is said to have pulled out a kitchen knife and prepared to stab him, according to the indictment. The victim woke up just in time. He blocked the opponent's arm and pushed it away until a neighbor separated the opponents. The 19-centimeter-long blade missed its target, which is one of the reasons why the indictment only assumes attempted dangerous bodily harm.

A large dark field

Asylum seekers and migrants of Christian faith are repeatedly put under pressure in the initial reception and follow-up accommodation in the Republic. Former Muslims who converted in particular suffer from hostility.

In October 2015, the Afghan asylum seeker Mohebolla A. beat up the Iranian Amir H. in Hamburg with a telescopic baton and the words "I'll kill you" - probably mainly because he had converted to Christianity.

In 2016, 32 Iranian asylum seekers, all Christians, reported massive religiously motivated attacks and death threats from Muslims in an initial reception center in Hesse.

When an Afghan in Swabia, Bavaria, converted to Christianity in 2019 and had a cross tattooed on his arm, he received specific death threats from fellow countrymen.
