Word 1
HOW IT ALL STARTED - THE BEGINNING . || Gen 12:6-8
* Gen 12:6 Here the Hebrew Abram was “passing through” the land, crossing over to his destination. Shechem: This ancient site was in the center of the land; later under Joshua’s leadership the people would commemorate the Lord’s covenant there (Jos_24:1) The term Moreh means “The Teacher.” It is related to the term Torah, which means “Instruction.” Here Abraham began symbolically taking possession of the land that would one day be the territory of the Great Teacher and His instruction. The land was already occupied by the Canaanites (Gen_13:7), but by God’s promise it would belong to Abraham’s descendants.

Word 2
HOW IT ALL STARTED - THE BEGINNING . || Gen 12:6-8
* Gen 12:7 This was the first time God appeared (theophany, or divine appearance) to Abram in the land of Canaan, but certainly not the last (Gen_13:14-17). The land of Canaan was a gift to the descendants of Abram. God owned the land (Psa_24:1); it was His to do with as He pleased. The people of Canaan had lost their right to occupy the land due to their awful depravity (Gen_15:16). Thus God declared that this land would become the land of Israel (Gen_15:18-21; Gen_17:6-8). This verse forms a part of the Abrahamic covenant (Gen_15:1-21, note), and Abraham quoted it many years later to his servant (Gen_24:7).

Word 3
HOW IT ALL STARTED - THE BEGINNING . || Gen 12:6-8
* Gen 12:8 Later, in the time of Jacob, the site of Bethel would play an important role (Gen_28:10-22). Ai means “Ruin.” The name suggests that the site was a ruin of an ancient city. Abram responded to God’s appearance by building an altar and worshiping the Lord. called on the name of the LORD: Not a private prayer, but a public proclamation. Abram was evangelizing—telling others about the Lord. God had commanded him to be a blessing to the nations (Gen_12:2) and he was doing it. No one is ever shameful of what is gainful!
