Over 220,000 residents in Augusta lost power after Hurricane Helene hit the area on Friday morning. The Category 4 storm made landfall along Florida's Big Bend coast Thursday night. Wind gusts reached up to 82 mph at Augusta Regional Airport, exceeding the National Weather Service's forecast of 58 to 73 mph. First responders reported multiple trees down on homes, cars, and roads, leading to subsequent car wrecks. Shelters are open at Henry Brigham Community Center (2463 Golden Camp Rd.) and May Park (622 Fourth St.) in Augusta. The Red Cross is offering support, and U.S. Marshals Service is providing security at shelter locations, which also have charging stations for devices.
