The spectacular moment a Kingfisher dives under water and catches a small fish in its beak.
When plunging underwater, the kingfisher protects its eyes by closing its third eyelid(nictating membrane). However, the small bird can still see as the eyelid is transparent, although it has a less sharp vision than when it's in the air. What is more important for the bird is the capacity to judge the distance of the moving prey than have a clear image. In fact, the kingfisher has monocular vision in the air and binocular vision underwater, which allows it to adjust to the change in refraction between air and water.
