Rahan.

Episode One hundred and Twelve.
By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Andre Cheret.
The Sun Stones.

When a powerful jet of steam suddenly burst out of a crevasse five paces away from him, the son of Crao was not surprised.
The bowels of the thundering mountain boil beneath the earth!

A similar phenomenon had preceded the great anger of the blue mountain, the one which had decimated his entire horde!
Smoke was rising from a nearby volcano.

Tomorrow, or perhaps the day after tomorrow, this mountain will vomit its fiery blood!
Rahan would rather be far from here then!

The most practical route to get away from the volcano quickly, was this dry river bed, which he had been following since dawn.
Oh! Rahan has never found such curious stones before!

Page Two.

For an arrow's length the bed was strewn with small stones glistening in the sun light.

Yellow like the sun! Bright like the sun!
The son of Crao had never seen gold, these nuggets astonished him without making him emotional.

He did not have time to think about his discovery. A strange monster was charging at him.
Like. You look like a "Two-nose," and you are not one!

He had never faced a triceratops before and he realized that he could do nothing against this enormous beast, armored with horns!
Run away! Rahan can only run away!

The walls of the gorge were steep now and he could only rely on his speed.
But he was wrong to turn around and.

Oh!

Page Three.

He only had time to roll onto his side.
You will not stab Rahan "Three Horns"!

Carried along by his weight, the triceratops overtook him, and turned heavily for a new attack.
Rahan still has a chance. If he can reach that fissure!

The son of the fierce ages leapt toward the narrow crack and huddled there.
But, for all that, he was not saved.

For the monster threw itself furiously against the wall which crumbled with each blow of the terrifying armoured head.
Baroom!

Rahan clutched his cutlass, but he knew that the ivory weapon would be useless to him.
And the breach widened!

Rahan refuses to be destroyed at the next charge!
The triceratops backed up, and backed up, as if to give more power to his attack.
With his three horns pointed, he was going to charge, when.

Page Four.

The glittering tip of a long arrow became lodged in one of his eyes!

Taking advantage of this unexpected help.
The son of Crao freed himself from the fracture which no longer offered him protection. But.

The monster had no intention of letting its prey escape.
The pain and rage made it even faster.

Rahan, this time, kept his head. But he heard and felt the beast very close behind him. So close.

And suddenly.
Argh!

Thrown to the ground by the blow of the horn, stunned, he saw the triceratops turn around.
He was going to be disemboweled, crushed, ground!

Page Five.

Zlap!
A second arrow, fired with the same precision, had just pierced the monster's other eye!

Blind, the triceratops was no longer to be feared.
He darted to one side, then to the other, turned in circles for a moment and moved away heavily.

Rahan thanks you and greets you brother!
The son of Crao rushed towards the vine that his savior, a tall hunter, threw at him.

He approached him quickly.
I am Igharoo, the leader of the "sunstone" clan!

Welcome to our territory, Rahan!
Igharoo had his arrows tucked into his belt.
Their tips were made of those shiny yellow stones that had intrigued Rahan.

The "Sunstones" are easier to shape than the "Star-throwing Stones".
We are envied for this secret, because we are the only ones who know the place in the "Dead River" where they are found!

Page Six.

Now Rahan also knows this place!
I hope you will not give away the secret!

The son of Crao and Igharoo walked for a long time in the forest.
Why did you save Rahan from the "Three-horns", Igharoo?
Because apart from Craanak, our clan has no enemies!

Igharoo had not finished these words when hunters appeared.
Those of Craanak!
Draw your weapon and defend your life, Rahan!

Assailed from all sides, Rahan defended himself as he was accustomed to.
Argh!

His companion was more expeditious. And each of his gold-tipped arrows carried!
Do not kill him! Craanak wants him alive!

His fierce resistance only ceased when he had fired his last arrow.
Craanak has been waiting for this day for moons, Igharoo!

Page Seven.

The two companions were brutally dragged to a village.
We finally captured Igharoo! See the arrows he shot at us!

Craanak howled with joy.
The "Sunstone" arrows!
The arrows that never miss the target! The magic arrows!

A hunter pointed out the son of Crao.
The man with the fiery hair defended himself like a wild animal, but he did not kill!

In this case he will be spared! But Igharoo.
Will be flogged until he reveals where he got the "Sunstones"!

A moment later Igharoo's torture began.
We know you are stubborn and courageous, Igharoo!
But you will give in! You will tell us where to find the "Sunstones"!

The vines tore at his skin, but the supplicant overcame his pain and remained stubbornly silent!
Rahan could stop this torture.

Page Eight.

By revealing to them the “Sun-Stones”!
But that would be betraying the trust of the one who saved him! No!
Rahan must remain silent, like Igharoo!

The son of the fierce ages nevertheless intervened.
Craanak and his people are wrong! The "Sunstone" arrows are not magic!

And if Igharoo always hits his target it is only because he is very skillful!
That is wrong! Magic arrows fly to the target by themselves! You will see!

Craanak placed a gold-tipped arrow on his bow and turned towards the tortured man.
Stop! Do not kill Igharoo!

Craanak is not crazy!
How would he discover his secret, if he killed Igharoo!?
The arrow flew away with a hiss. And.

Grazed the vine that suspended Igharoo in the void.
Hum. You said that the "Magic Arrows" always hit the target?

Page Nine.

Zip!
Furious, Craanak fired a second arrow, then a third.
Like the first one, they grazed the target.

Rahan will prove to you that the "sun-points" are not magic! Lend him your bow and arrows!
Grumbling, Craanak complied.

The son of Crao bent his bow. The simple flint-tipped arrow sought the target.
Rahan must succeed!
Otherwise Craanak will never be convinced!

A clamor arose. The flint had sheared the fibers of the vine!

And Igharoo fell abruptly to the ground.
You see that an ordinary arrow can do better than those with "sunstones"!

You are the one who killed the power of magic arrows "Fire-hair"!
You are a sorcerer! You are going to die!
Craanak launched himself at the son of Crao.

Page Ten.

Who predicted this reaction!
If Craanak takes one more step, he will be the one to join the "Territory-of-Shadows"!

Now, with one hand holding the bow drawn, he stepped back towards Igharoo, and cut his bonds.

Craanak's hunters did not flinch as the two men retreated towards the forest.

But as soon as they disappeared, they wanted to rush forward.
No! Leave them! Their tracks will lead us to the "Sun-stones"!

As Rahan and Igharoo fled, the volcano in the distance grew louder and louder.
This is the first time that this "Mount-that-thunders" has gotten angry!

Soon they reached the dry river bed and shouts of joy rang out.
Igharoo is alive! Igharoo is back!
These are my brothers, Rahan!

Page Eleven.

All these men were armed with arrows and spears with gold tips.
Your long absence worried the clan, Igharoo!
We were looking for you!

And you would never have found me alive without that brave "Hair of Fire"!
His name is Rahan, his heart is pure and his skill equal to ours!
He is worthy of.

A scream interrupted Igharoo.
Look! Craanak was Right to be cunning! Igharoo unknowingly led us to the "Sunstones"!

The whole clan of Craanak descended into the bed strewn with gold nuggets.
Igharoo and his people rushed to meet them!

Stop! Those-who-walk-upright must not kill each other for.
These vulgar "sunstones"!
But the son of Crao could not prevent the violent, fierce confrontation that was taking place before his eyes.

Men had already fallen on both sides when a fantastic explosion shook the atmosphere!
Everyone froze, petrified by fear.
Kaboom!

Page Twelve.

When the lava torrent rushed down towards the river bed, there was panic.
Abandoning the wounded and the dead, each clan fled to its territory.
These men have never witnessed the wrath of a "Mountain-Who-Thunders"!

The son of Crao joined those of the "sunstones."
But Suddenly.
Igharoo! Where is Igharoo?
Anxious, Rahan turned back.

And as the lava flow slowly flowed into the dry bed, he saw the leader dragging himself along the ground.
Rahan will not let the torrent of fire engulf Igharoo!

The wave of incandescent lava rolled very slowly. But it was only an arrow's throw away when Rahan arrived near his companion.
Run away Rahan! Run away! You cannot do anything for me!

Injured in the legs during the fight, Igharoo could not get up.
Rahan will carry you! He will not abandon you to the "blood" of the thundering mountain!

Page thirteen.

The lava was approaching inexorably. The Son of Crao was lifting his companion, when.
Argh!

Rahan extracted the arrow that had just struck him.
An arrow fired by Craanak who was lying twenty paces away, also wounded in the legs.

We will join the "territory-of-shadows" All together!
The glowing mud was still advancing and Rahan could no longer carry Igharoo!

He still had time to flee, but the idea did not occur to him to abandon the one who had saved him from the "Three horns."
We still have a chance! One last chance!

And he began to push, to pull, and to roll rocks against each other.
The air was now superheated.

And the thick, slow wave of fire was only a few steps away when he helped Igharoo up onto the islet of rocks.
Quickly, quickly!

Page Fourteen.

Craanak, who had understood, crawled towards these rocks.
Craanak does not want to be eaten by fire!

You have made Igharoo suffer, Craanak!
Why should he share this refuge with you?
You have to, Igharoo! Rahan asks you!

A moment later, engulfing the "Sunstones" forever, the flow of lava isolated the islet where the three men were hurrying.

The smoke was suffocating, the heat unbearable.
If the lava rose again it would be the most atrocious death.

But the volcano fell silent and the incandescent layer, now stabilized, occupied the bed where a large river had once flowed.
The "Blood of the Mountain" will not cool down for a long time!

Huddled together on the burning rocks, Rahan and the two chiefs experienced a terrible night. But this night was positive.

Page Fifteen.

The "Sun-Stones" are no longer a source of quarrels between your clans!
Rubbing shoulders with death so closely made Igharoo and Craanak think.

At sunrise the "Blood of the Mountain" was nothing more than a thick crust as hard as a rock.
The clans reappeared, ready for a new confrontation!

Stop!
Do not shoot your arrows!
Igharoo has understood that we are wrong to keep the "sun stones" for ourselves!

And Craanak was crazy to believe in the magical power of the "Sunstone" arrows!

Shortly after, each carried by his people, the two chiefs returned to their territory.
They addressed to Rahan the same grateful and fraternal greeting.

The son of Crao had managed to convince them that he could not attach himself to one clan or the other. He responded to the greetings and.

He went to his side, near the still hot lava track which would lead him towards other horizons, towards other men.
