Digging Open a New Cave in North Alabama

We came across this tiny hole when hiking through a remote area in DeKalb County, Alabama, and decided to dig it open to see what lies below. In Alabama, a hole has to have at least 50 feet of passable passage before it can be submitted as an official new cave. Some times they qualify and oftentimes they do not. The fifty feet criteria can be a combination of both horizontal and vertical passage. Did this one qualify? Check out the video to find out.

As always, cave exploring can be a dangerous activity and should not be attempted by anyone without the proper training and experience. If you are interested in learning more about caves or going on a wild caving trip, a good place to start is the National Speleological Society (NSS): www.caves.org
