The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the ocean and is home to some of the deepest known points on Earth:
Location
The Mariana Trench is located in the western Pacific Ocean, east and south of the Mariana Islands.
Depth
The Mariana Trench's deepest point, the Challenger Deep, is 10,984 meters (36,037 ft) deep, which is more than 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) deeper than the peak of Mount Everest.
Size
The trench is about 2,550 kilometers (1,580 miles) long and 69 kilometers (43 miles) wide.
Geology
The trench was formed when the Pacific tectonic plate moved beneath the Philippine Sea Plate and into the Earth's mantle. It's believed to be around 180 million years old, making it one of the oldest seabeds on the planet.
Life
Some animals, such as the deep-sea crustacean Hirondellea gigas, live in the trench. Monothalamea, a type of one-celled organism, has also been found at depths of up to 10.6 kilometers (35,000 ft) below the sea surface.
Pollution
The trench is affected by plastic pollution, which filters through the ocean and concentrates at its deepest points.
