Mute Swans are big white birds you'll often see on lakes and rivers in the UK. Despite their name, they're not actually mute - they can make grunting and hissing noises. These swans are known for their orange beaks with a black knob at the base.
They're one of the heaviest flying birds, weighing up to 12 kg. Mute Swans eat water plants, small animals, and bread that people feed them (though bread isn't good for them). They make their nests on the ground near water, using plants and mud.
Mute Swans mate for life and both parents look after their young, called cygnets. The cygnets are grey when they hatch and turn white after a year. These swans can be quite aggressive, especially when protecting their nest or young.
In the past, only the monarch could own Mute Swans, but now they're protected by law. They usually live for about 10 years in the wild, but some can live much longer.
