Tuesday saw the release of the third film from the blossoming new production company Tiger Style Media in Lady Scorpions which hails from Hollywood producer Shannon McIntosh (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood) as a means to deliver old school, throwback martial arts action vibes infused with a next gen style way of filmmaking. The biggest draw to these films is that they promise hard hitting, no mercy, jaw snapping action design with legit onscreen fighting talent to satisfy the action masses that worship in the house of adrenaline cinema. The first two films, Art of Eight Limbs and The Lockdown, did service to scratch that action itch to a point but they were ultimately a mixed bag of good and bad that seems to plague this style of films even to this day. With the queen of martial arts herself, Cynthia Rothrock, leading the way with this third pic along with promising newcomer Caitlin Dechelle (Wonder Woman) as well as genre icon Jeff Fahey (Operation Delta Force) in a brutal and pulverizing new pic about a mother and daughter who unite to rescue the latter’s daughter from a ruthless crime syndicate. run by Fahey. Was this entry in the stream of four premiere flicks better than the last two. Unfortunately, the answer is, once again, yes and now.

I’m going to focus on the positives here first as there are a lot of them and it starts with our two femme fatale ladies who dish out several sequences of Hell hath No Fury in the movie’s 101-minute running time. It’s nothing short of spectacular to see Rothrock back on the horse again and doing all the things she has dome for years ion the genre and she looks amazing as always. Rothrock is an icon for sure and here as DEA agent Alena Moore, she brandishes here awesome signature skills once again. Rothrock always has a commanding presence and here she is a take no crap agent who is on a decade’s long vendetta against Jeff Fahey’s Lucien who is a major drug runner who is looking to retire and leave his life of brutality and immorality behind.

Unfortunately for him, his son named coincidentally enough Sonny (Jose Manuel) is a spoiled, annoying, pompous sociopath who doesn’t run things at all like the old school methods he has done in the past. Sonny makes rash decisions, goes against his father’s wishes and basically just decimates anything in his way and most importantly, just screws things up. Moore has been a constant thorn in the father and son operation for a long time and that’s when Alena’s daughter Lacy (Dechelle) factors in as Sonny kidnaps her daughter, Alena’s granddaughter, Ariel (Sofia O’Brien) and proceeds to anger both women to the point where they team up to become a mother/daughter commando unit bent on vengeance. it also helps that Lacy is a qualified self-defense instructor who runs her own protection school so she’s as lethal as mom is when the fists and feet start to fly.

This is Caitlin Dechelle’s first leading role, but she is no stranger to action as she is an accomplished martial artist and stunt professional who is best known for doubling Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman. Like the filmmakers promise, Dechelle is legit, and her fight sequences serve up a brutal and bone crunching cornucopia of onscreen violence and breakneck symmetry that showcases why she has a future starring in these types of films. This may be her first real starring role, but she keeps up with the veteran Rothrock just fine and even steals the show when to comes time to flash the skill set. Her first altercation at the beginning is a like a trumpet sounding her arrival as it is extreme, grounded, and expertly executed. I’m a fan and she is officially on my radar.

As villains go, Fahey commands the screen as always as the dreaded Lucien. Even though he is the film’s antagonist, he still has a moral compass and likes to do things on the down low which interferes with Sonny’s battering ram tactics. Lucien just wants to live out his life in hopes that his past mistakes don’t kill him, but his own son and the Moore women are making it hard to do just that. Fahey plays Lucien with enough layers to make him interesting and even though he’s done some really bad things, he’s still just so damn cool that it’s hard to completely hate him. His son on the other hand is another story. Sonny has no redeeming qualities whatsoever and Manuel plays him off kilter and over the top just like fans would see in a 90’s DTV flick. When Sonny eventually gets his just due, it’s well worth it. I always say that if you despise the villain then that actor did his or her job quite well.

Actor David W Rice is another nice surprise as he plays one of Lucien’s henchmen Bobo. From the start, we learn that there is more than meets the eye with him and his character arc is a yin to the yang of the film’s darker elements. You can see what team he is playing on eventually from a mile away, but Rice goes all in and gets in on the action as well.

Director Bruce Del Castillo has some fun with Lady Scorpions and makes it resemble something Tarantino or Rodriguez would do back in the day with the pulpy feel of Kill Bill and Desperado with a dash of Pulp Fiction sprinkled throughout. From the quirky music to the extreme close ups of the actors’ faces, this all has the makings of an exploitation flick that you would see in the 70’s albeit, a very subdued one that never really goes over the edge like it could have. It does resonate a fun feel to the proceedings and there is some extreme violence to be had (especially the opening moments which tells the audience that this isn’t a family friendly affair) but I was hoping that it would have crossed that line and delivered something that the iconic directors would do especially when it comes to the action.

In terms of cinematography, this one is mediated to the usual warehouses and factories for locations but that’s not a deal breaker as many movies like this one back in the 90’s lived in those locations. One good aspect about Art of Eight Limbs was that the locale was stunning, and it offered a less claustrophobic appeal to it. Here, there isn’t much to look at when the action hits outside but that’s OK I guess a sit’s all about the action.

The action in Lady Scorpions offers up several serviceable sequences and the filmmakers let Rothrock and Dechelle do their thing, but it takes a little while for the two to eventually team up and I would have liked a little more interaction between mom and daughter as that was the selling point here. Rothrock proves why she is the queen while Dechelle summons up some kick ass next gen moves that are welcoming and the action design, which is far from The Raid or other recent hits, still entertains and all of it is shot nicely and cleanly so we can see what is happening. Both women dish out some punishment and the finale is definitely a step up from The Lockdown which seemed to falter in its climax and limp to the finish line.

The audience gets all the inevitable showdowns and plot tropes to be had and there are some really exciting engagements between Rothrock, Dechelle and two of Lucien’s soldiers played by Mamyi I and Noah Pao who play Bing and Ren respectively. They are two Japanese assassins who bring some extreme action to the design, and they get ample opportunity to display their lightning paced maneuvers throughout with a blood-soaked climax that sees a good old throat ripping ala Roadhouse. The film’s fight coordinator and designer Angel Brophy keeps the action stripped down and never lets it get ridiculous which was a nice aspect. When I was watching this, I felt like I was watching an old school Rothrock pic complete with the ample kicking combos and signature moves that she is famous for.

Dechelle is a real deal talent, and you can see why she was a stunt double for Gadot. Her moves are sick and punishing and when she hits, you can feel it which is the best compliment I can give. While she was performing her action sequences, it was sort of like watching Rothrock back in the day and it felt like the former was passing the torch to the latter. Subsequently, Dechelle also stars in Tiger Style Media’s final film to hit this month with Kung Fu Games that also stars British bruiser Mark Strange (Ip Man: The Finale). Lady Scorpions initially feels like an appetizer to that one so I’m even more intrigued to watch Kung Fu Games when it hits next weel. I have a feeling that that one might be a rousing exclamation point to all these films and I like what I saw from the trailer, but we shall see.

The real problem I had with Lady Scorpions is that it takes a while for the fights to commence as just when you think the shit is going to hit the fan, everyone starts talking first. This might be due to budgetary constraints, but I was hoping for more screen time when it did come to what we all came to see. In a film like this, it’s always a good thing to let your fists and feet do the talking and several times, the pacing came to a crashing hold.

Now let’s talk about the real elephant in the room. Without giving anything away, the finale is abruptly cut off as it was finally getting good. The action literally stops on a dime, and we are thrust into the future where things have settled down and all is well again. But even then, something ominous happens and then it fades to black with the credits starting to roll, and you’re left there pondering what you just saw. It’s truly a perplexing, head scratching moment that ultimately dragged a decent martial arts revenge flick down a notch. Did they run out of money? Was it a cliffhanger? Will we be able to see what happens in another film? Was it to be left up to the viewer’s mind as to what happened next? As you can see, these are all way too many questions one should have when the film ends. Personally, I’m really hoping for another round but who knows. It’s extremely unfortunate as it affected my overall score for the film.

Overall, Lady Scorpions delivers more of the same with this slate of Tiger Style Media films. There’s good and bad to be had here but ultimately, I had a guilty pleasure time watching this one. Cynthia Rothrock is back on the screen showing us why she is the best and newcomer Caitlin Dechelle ushers in a next generation of DTV action vibes that is definitely warranted and welcoming. There is enough pulverizing action design to be had and the pulp residue on it makes for a fun and inviting experience. The finale and climax definitely needed more of the hard-hitting stuff and the abrupt ending was not favorable, but our two lead stars and the always welcoming Jeff Fahey rise above it all to bring us some simple, old school, beatdown vibes that infuses old school theatrics with next generation appeal.
