After getting to see Michael Keaton reprise his role as Beetlejuice later this year, the Oscar nominee will be shifting to something much harder than trying to come back from the afterlife: parenthood.

Keaton stars alongside Mila Kunis in “Goodrich,” a heartwarming dramedy written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer (“Home Again”) in which Keaton needs to learn to be a father to two different sets of kids at very different ages.

According to the synopsis, Keaton plays Andy Goodrich, “whose life is upended when his wife and mother of their nine-year-old twins enters a 90-day rehab program, leaving him on his own with their young kids. In order to get by, he leans on the help of his adult daughter from his first marriage, Grace (Kunis), ultimately evolving into the father Grace never had.”

The first trailer for “Goodrich,” which you can watch below, shows Keaton trying to convince his kids he’s not actually as old as their grandmother, going to PTA conferences, and making a fool of himself at a group therapy session with Kunis. In one scene, we also see Kunis babysitting her two half-siblings and explaining why she refers to Goodrich as “her dad” rather than “our dad.”

“Well, I’m 27 years older than you, which is basically unheard of for siblings … except maybe in LA,” Kunis’ character jokes.

Also starring in “Goodrich” are Carmen Ejogo, Michael Urie, Kevin Pollak, Viven Lyra Blair, Nico Haraga, and Danny Deferrari, with Lauren Benanti and Andie MacDowell. The film was produced by Daniela Taplin Lundberg, Kevin Mann, and Dave Caplan, and both Keaton and Kunis are executive producers on the project alongside Amy Pascal.

“Goodrich” is the second feature for Meyers-Shyer, who previously directed “Home Again” with Reese Witherspoon. She’s from good filmmaking stock, too: her mother is Nancy Meyers and her father is Charles Shyer.

Ketchup Entertainment, which last year released Robert Rodriguez’s “Hypnotic” and Michel Franco’s “Memory,” is releasing “Goodrich” in theaters on October 18. Check out the first trailer below.

Kunis and Keaton teased the movie in a Zoom conversation as she taught her onscreen dad how to post the trailer to his social media. “I posted this on my own by the way,” Keaton wrote on his Instagram Story with the trailer.

Written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, Goodrich also stars Andie MacDowell, Michael Urie, Carmen Ejogo, Laura Benanti, Kevin Pollak, Viven Lyra Blair, Nico Haraga and Danny Deferrari.

After Ketchup Entertainment acquired the movie in a competitive mid-seven-figure deal in January, Goodrich premieres October 18 in theaters.

Ketchup Entertainment has revealed the first official trailer for a parenting comedy called Goodrich, after the main character in this whose name is Andy Goodrich. A new movie from the same writer and director of Reese Witherspoon's Home Again a few years ago. In this fun comedy produced by the two lead actors, a father seeks the help of his adult daughter to raise his young twins when his second wife leaves him. Michael Keaton plays Andy, who is left to take care of his two kids when his wife heads to rehab. So he turns to Grace, played by Mila Kunis, daughter from his first marriage hoping she'll help him out. The full cast includes Carmen Ejogo, Michael Urie, Kevin Pollak, Viven Lyra Blair, Nico Haraga, Danny Deferrari, Lauren Benanti, and Andie MacDowell. This looks sweet and funny and wholesome, of course. Hopefully it's actually good.

In the trailer, Grace tells her young siblings, “I am 27 years older than you, which is basically unheard of for siblings... except maybe in LA.” Kunis and Keaton also had fun promoting the movie. In a Zoom chat, she showed her on-screen dad how to share the trailer on social media. Keaton even posted on Instagram, joking that he shared it all by himself.

In May 2019, it was announced that a comedy film titled Goodrich was in development with Hallie Meyers-Shyer directing the film and writing the screenplay, and Amy Pascal serving as a producer. Michael Keaton Douglas was cast in the lead role as Andy Goodrich. In March 2023, Mila Kunis joined the cast as Grace Goodrich with Pascal transitioning to an executive producer role.[3] In April 2023, Andie MacDowell, Carmen Ejogo and Kevin Pollak were added to the cast.[4] That same month, Michael Urie, Laura Benanti, Danny Deferrari,[5] and Poorna Jagannathan joined the cast.[6] In May, Vivien Lyra Blair was cast.[7] Ketchup Entertainment paid to acquire the film and has committed to a wide theatrical release.[8]

Filming
Principal photography began in April 2023, in Los Angeles.[3]Michael Keaton is returning to the big screen to make audiences simultaneously laugh and cry in the new trailer for Goodrich. Also starring Mila Kunis, the new comedy, written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer just dropped its first trailer online. Keaton plays Andy Goodrich, whose life is turned upside down when he's forced to step up as a parent to his nine-year-old twins. Andy is forced to enlist the help of his adult daughter, Grace (Kunis). While the pair go about raising the twins, Grace struggles with watching Andy become the father she never had growing up.

Goodrich is distributed by Ketchup Entertainment — who are also overseeing the release of this year's Hellboy reboot, Hellboy: The Crooked Man — after the company paid "mid-seven figures" (via Deadline) for the rights. Alongside Keaton and Kunis, Goodrich also stars Carmen Ejogo, Michael Urie, Viven Lyra Blair, Kevin Pollak, Nico Haraga, Danny Deferrari, Lauren Benanti, and Andie MacDowell.

Goodrich isn't the only comedy Michael Keaton is starring in this year. With Tim Burton back in the director's chair, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is letting the juice loose once again. It's been over 35 years since Keaton played the undead lawyer in Burton's original Beetlejuice. The new movie sees Burton and Keaton re-unite with Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara.

Set decades after the original, Lydia (Ryder) is now raising her teenage daughter, Astrid (Ortega), with the 'help' of her own mother, Delia (O'Hara). When an unexpected tragedy sees the Deetz family return to Winter River, Astrid discovers a portal to the afterlife and, in true teenage fashion, sarcastically releases Beetlejuice.

Legacy sequels have become somewhat controversial for fans in recent years. While some audiences welcome the chance to see their favorite characters return to the big screen, others worry that the sequel will fail to live up to the beloved quality of the original. The same is true for fans of Beetlejuice. However, Keaton is putting fans at ease by making a strong statement about the new sequel. The story follows Keaton’s character, Andy Goodrich, in his very LA life as an older man married to a younger woman, with nine-year-old twins in tow, according to the description. When his wife goes into a rehab program, Keaton is left alone with his kids and turns to his adult daughter, Grace (Kunis), for support.

It sounds like the movie will follow a fairly predictable emotional plot line, though it kind of feels like it’s coming at the right time. We’ve had a season of blockbuster films and shows, each more action-packed, adrenaline, violence, and explosion-filled than the last (and a few twisters, at that). “Goodrich” feels more like a human story, something approachable that isn’t just escapism. Overall, this movie feels like the perfect pick for Keaton after filming the sequel to Tim Burton’s cult phenomenon “BEETLEJUICE.” Movie Insider suggests he shot “Goodrich” within months of finishing up the demon horror comedy, probably as a palette cleanser from such an intense character.
