Meta Quest 3s - Reasons NOT to Buy ❌

Here’s some reasons NOT to buy the Meta Quest 3s….

The Meta Quest 2/Oculus Quest 2 has officially left the building and yes, Meta Quest 3s is here to take its position.

After watching the keynote, what became apparent to me when it comes to the Quest 2 vs Quest 3s was that Meta have pretty much made a hybrid model that incorporates elements from both devices to create an optimal VR experience, very similar to the Quest 3, at a price point for general consumers.

However, while the launch of the Quest 3s is exciting in VR news, I couldn’t help but feel that one feature in particular is going to be a let down for a lot of users who buy the Meta Quest 3s, and that feature is the Fresnel lenses.

Meta have decided not to utilize the Pancake lens technology they introduced with the launch of Quest Pro & the Quest 3 update.

My guess is this was to keep costs as low as possible to make VR even more affordable. I also wouldn’t expect those who are new to VR to really know or care too much about which lenses are in their headset or even what makes them different.

But what I can say as both a Meta Quest 2 & Meta Quest 3 user, is that the lenses on these 2 headsets actually make a significant difference when it comes to user experience, not just visually, but physically too.

I’m not joking when I tell you this, but wearing the Meta Quest 2 for any longer than 30 minutes would give me significant headaches and eye strain, to a point where my eyes literally felt like they were throbbing in my head.

Initially I just thought my eyes were maybe just a bit sensitive , however after talking to other Quest 2 users, it turns out this problem is incredibly common.

And what’s interesting is I don’t have the same issue with the Meta Quest 3 and can wear the device for almost 2 hours without getting a headache. I’m no rocket scientist, but I’m pretty sure it’s the Pancake lenses that make all the difference and it’s a difference that for me, really counts as I don’t exactly like having a throbbing headache.. Or know anybody that does lol.

So in review, when we have a good look at Quest 3s vs Quest 3, I think it’s safe to say they are both going to deliver an unparalleled VR/MR experience compared with the Quest 2. They both have color pass through, they both have the upgraded controllers and both have much higher processing power, it’s just the lenses that are different and in my opinion make purchasing the Quest 3 far more worth it if you want the premium VR experience.

Now obviously it’s going to take a while for us to see a Meta Quest 3s review from a genuine consumer who isn’t a VR influencer such as Vrelity, but I’m sure with time we’ll get the feedback and I won’t be surprised if users start complaining about getting headaches.

Anyway, I don’t want to completely detract from the progress Meta has made in bringing the Meta Quest 3s to market. It’s still going to light people up, Fresnel lens headaches aside, the Quest 2 was a good enough experience to get me hooked on VR so I can only imagine that this is going to do wonders for the adoption rates in VR technology and I can’t wait for this field to continue unfolding!

On a final note, I’m also really excited for the technology developments Meta have been doing beyond the Quest 3 news.

The unveiling of those Orion glasses as well as some of the cool new updates they have incorporated into the Meta smart glasses are pretty insane and I’m pretty much convinced now that I need to try the Smart Glasses after seeing some of those use cases in the keynote.
