Dot Esports Associate Editor Tom Foley, who previously worked at CBR, recently sparked outrage within the gaming community with his article criticizing Black Myth: Wukong for its lack of diversity. In the piece titled "Black Myth: Wukong's Shameless Lack of Diversity is Attracting the Wrong Type of Fans," Foley takes aim at Game Science, the developers behind the highly anticipated game Black Myth Wukong gameplay, accusing them of catering to non-woke audiences.

Foley expressed his frustration by highlighting comments from gamers who praised the Black Myth Wukong trailer and gameplay for not being "gay or woke." He pointed out that Black Myth: Wukong has received a significant amount of attention, particularly on platforms like Pubity’s Instagram page, where news about Black Myth Wukong breaking Steam’s single-player record sparked debates.

Despite admitting that the game is fantastic and awarding it an 8 out of 10, Foley critiqued the game’s lack of female representation, stating that after over 40 hours of Black Myth Wukong PS5 gameplay, he had yet to encounter a single significant female character. He referenced only one inanimate miniboss named the Mother of Stone and argued that the absence of diversity was intentional.

Foley went on to suggest that Black Myth Wukong could have benefited from more diversity, claiming that diverse games tend to appeal to a broader audience and can improve sales by tapping into new markets. He also mentioned that inclusive games feel more relatable to a wider audience, satisfying the community's growing demand for inclusivity in the industry.

Ironically, Foley's argument seemed to contradict his earlier observations about Black Myth Wukong's success, particularly its record-breaking number of concurrent players on Steam. He accused Game Science of deliberately ignoring diversity, despite the game's immense popularity.

Foley’s critique escalated when he suggested that the game, which features an anthropomorphic monkey as its main character, was biased towards straight male representation. He argued that the absence of diverse characters in Black Myth Wukong sends a negative message about the importance of diversity in gaming.

After making these claims, Foley concluded by warning that the lack of diversity in games like Black Myth: Wukong could encourage toxic community behavior. He ironically noted that dividing gamers is harmful to the industry, despite his own divisive comments.

Meanwhile, IGN reporter Rebekah Valentine has also come under fire for her own controversial takes on Black Myth: Wukong. Valentine, known for her woke perspectives, doubled down on her misleading article, which many fans felt slandered the developers of Black Myth Wukong.

Valentine took to ResetEra to defend her article, despite growing criticism from the community. She refused to acknowledge any mistakes in her reporting, instead standing firm on her claims. Valentine’s response on ResetEra was met with backlash, as many accused her of failing to consider alternative perspectives, particularly regarding Black Myth Wukong's story and development.

Valentine’s stance, along with IGN’s continued support of her article, has further damaged the credibility of gaming journalism. Despite Black Myth Wukong's success, IGN and Valentine seem determined to push their narrative, ignoring the game’s popularity and the fans’ positive reception.

As the debate continues, it’s clear that the gaming community is growing increasingly frustrated with what they see as biased reporting from major outlets like IGN. With YouTubers like 8-Bit Eric holding journalists accountable, the future of gaming journalism seems more uncertain than ever.
