Today, on Day 231 of my sobriety, I listened to Dan Vasc’s rendition of "Amazing Grace". This song holds deep meaning for me as it was one of the first pieces of music I experienced live. My grandpa used to play it on the organ, and hearing him perform it was a powerful memory from my childhood. I listen to "Amazing Grace" at least 10 times a year, as it brings back that personal connection.

Before the music, I reflected on an important realization in my sobriety journey. While gratitude for higher powers or God is a common theme in recovery, particularly in the 12-step programs I attended when I was younger, I believe it's just as essential to take credit for our own hard work. I’ve always found it difficult to understand why people often don't acknowledge the effort they put into their sobriety, giving most of the credit to external forces. For me, sobriety is also about thanking myself for the dedication and effort I’ve put in to make my life better.

As for Dan Vasc’s version of "Amazing Grace", it was nothing short of spectacular. Though I might have heard this cover before, today it felt as if I was listening to it for the first time. The music was beautiful, and for the first time, I didn’t associate this song with sorrow or longing. Instead, I felt pure joy. That’s a huge milestone for me — to listen to this song and smile without the tears or the wish for a different life. Now, that’s truly "Amazing Grace"!
