Category 4 Hurricane Helene batters Florida

Authorities are carrying out emergency evacuations across Florida, as Hurricane Helene makes landfall in the state. More than 70,000 people have already left their homes, amid what is feared to be the strongest hurricane since the mid 1800s.

Eyewitness footage shows the severity of the storm, with high winds, flash floods and flying debris caught on camera. Over a million homes and businesses are without power, and at least one person has been killed by falling debris. Mass destruction of property is also expected, with officials pleading with those who have not yet complied with mandatory evacuation orders to do so.
