In a world in which no one speaks, a mysterious, devout community hunts down a young woman named Azrael (Samara Weaving) who has escaped their imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, she is to be sacrificed to pacify an evil which resides deep within the surrounding wilderness – but Azrael will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival. Azrael is directed by American genre filmmaker E.L. Katz (aka Evan Katz), director of the films Cheap Thrills and Small Crimes previously, plus episodes of the series "Channel Zero", "Swamp Thing", and "The Haunting of Bly Manor" most recently; he's also a writer on many horror projects. The screenplay is written by Simon Barrett (A Horrible Way to Die, You're Next, The Guest, Blair Witch, Temple, Seance). Produced by Simon Barrett, Dave Caplan, and Dan Kagan. This initially premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. IFC Films & Shudder will debut E.L. Katz's Azrael in select US theaters starting on September 27th, 2024 this fall. No dialogue in the world of Azrael sets the stage for a terrifying chase between a young woman and her captors.
Director E.L. Katz, known for tense atmospheres, brings his skills to Azrael as Samara Weaving fights for survival.
The new trailer teases a horrifying community, action-packed sequences, and a sacrifice to an evil entity in the forest.
The first trailer for Azrael has been released. This new horror story produced by IFC Films will take place in a world where no one can speak. The titular character will be portrayed by Samara Weaving, as the young woman attempts to escape from the mysterious, devout community who kept her captive. If they manage to get a hold on Azrael again, the protagonist will be sacrificed to an evil entity who lives in the forest. The stage has been set for Azrael's quest for survival.

Azrael was directed by E.L. Katz, the filmmaker who previously worked on Small Crimes. The crime story starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau proved that the director knows how to handle tense atmospheres, a skill that will be on display once Azrael realizes what she'll be up against. Katz also directed A is for Amateur, a horror short that was featured in the ABCs of Death 2 anthology. The screenplay for Azrael was written by Simon Barrett. The screenwriter previously worked on this year's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

The cast of Azrael will also include Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Vic Carmen Sonne and Katariina Unt. The new trailer for the upcoming movie gives audiences their first glimpse at the horrifying community that kidnapped the titular character. Considering that no one in the world of the upcoming feature will be able to speak, the only sound that will be heard in the forest from time to time will be the cries of the creature that demands Azrael's sacrifice. The trailer also reveals action sequences that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

Samara Weaving's Latest Projects

Samara Weaving is ready to dive deep into the world of Azrael, but the performer has been busy with a wide variety of projects in recent years. Weaving was previously seen as Laura Crane in Scream VI, the sequel that followed Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tam Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) as they tried to get away from Ghostface. Weaving also starred as Constance Moore in Babylon. The movie written and directed by Damien Chazelle went to receive three nominations at the Academy Awards.

But the title that established Samara Weaving as an acclaimed scream queen was Ready or Not. The comedy directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet allowed the actress to shine as Grace. Weaving's first leading role on the big screen had her stepping into the shoes of Grace, a bride who realizes that she married into a family that made a deal with the devil. A few years after starring in Ready or Not, Weaving is looking to establish another major role in her career thanks to Azrael.

You can check out the new trailer for Azrael above, before the movie premieres in theaters on September 27.

Azrael trailer displays terrifying cult rituals and a post-rapture setting in the upcoming horror film.
Samara Weaving's role in Azrael may solidify her as a horror icon after previous successes in Ready or Not and Scream VI.
The film looks to be an interesting entry in the 2024 horror lineup.
The new trailer has been revealed for Azrael. The upcoming horror movie tells the story of a post-rapture world in which no one speaks anymore. In said world, the titular young woman, Azrael, who is set to be sacrificed, must struggle to avoid her fate after being hunted down. Azrael is directed by E.L. Katz and features a leading cast including Samara Weaving, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Vic Carmen Sonne, Sebastian Bull, and Eero Milonoff.

Now, IFC Films has released the trailer for Azrael.

The trailer opens abruptly, establishing the vast wilderness setting wherein Azrael is captured by a cult. Further glimpses of the cult show the group guarding their houses with secret traps, crafting twig-constructed crucifixes on trees, and practicing intense religious rituals. Text on screen reveals that "After the rapture, those who survive, will suffer in silence." The trailer then delves into Azrael's terrifying capture, in which she has to fight for her life against the cult, and against demons that stalk her. The trailer also confirmed the film's release date to be September 27.

Azrael Can Help Establish Samara Weaving As A Horror Icon
She Previously Starred In Ready Or Not
Grace sits in front of a burning house while drenched in blood.
The trailer for Azrael looks promising in that it borrows key aspects from several majorly successful horror films of late. Albeit for a different reason, it finds fear in silence like A Quiet Place, a 2018 horror film that has since been transformed into a mini-franchise of sorts. It also has the kind of religious cultism that has succeeded in films such as Immaculate and The First Omen, though the outlandish nature of the rituals seems more akin to films like Midsommar. With these various elements at play, Azrael looks to be a fascinating entry into the 2024 horror slate.

Another compelling aspect of the film is its star, Weaving. The actor previously appeared in Ready or Not, where she plays a bride whose wedding night turns into something far more sinister. Ready or Not was extremely successful upon its 2019 release, receiving positive reviews and a good profit. Made on an estimated $6 million budget, Ready or Not ended up raking in roughly $57.6 million at the global box office. The film's success was a big deal for Weaving, who broke out more into the mainstream with the horror film.

Even though 2024 has been filled with new horror movies, this lesser-known Korean horror film proves itself to be the best and worth a watch.

Since her appearance in Ready or Not, Weaving went on to star in a horror film again when she played Laura Crane in Scream VI. With this pattern, Azrael will give the actor another chance to play a key role in a horror film. The movie also looks to be one of her more challenging films yet, which will give Weaving the chance to fully demonstrate what she is capable of. Hopefully, Azrael offers her the chance to again show she's got the acting chops to become a true horror icon.

E.L. Katz's post-apocalyptic, mostly dialogue-free, action horror Azrael is coming to theaters on September 27th, 2024. IFC Films and Shudder are handling the theatrical and streaming release of the film. The official trailer has been released today, check it out down below.

With Samara Weaving in the lead and a screenplay written by proven wordsmith Sean Barrett - shriking our expectations by writing less than half a dozen lines of dialogue - Azrael is a run and gun action thriller from start to finish.

From the seeds of this gritty, relentless parable of sacrifice and salvation, comes an immersive, real-time, action horror tale from the visionary minds of Simon Barrett and E.L. Katz.

Our own Josh caught the flick when it premiered at SXSW. Find their full review here, but here is the final paragraph to give you an idea of how much they liked it.

Written by genre film veteran Simon Barrett (You’re Next, The Guest, A Horrible Way to Die), Azrael is a shockingly effective experiment in dialogue-free filmmaking. While it has been proven that this can be a recipe for success – look no further than the runaway success of A Quiet Place – Azrael feels different. Barrett and Katz manage to deliver not only superb action and real tension throughout, but also use visual language to convey a fairly complex mythology without overexplaining, allowing the viewer to fill in gaps when needed and sit back and relax when the action gets heavy. Azrael is a thrilling sprint through a heretofore unexplored hellscape that had me riveted, this is definitely one to look out for.

Azrael stars the aformentioned Samara Weaving, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Vic Carmen Sonne, Katariina Unt, and Sebastian Bull Sarning.
If you have watched our Happy Hour episodes or picked up on my various moments when I get to talk about it, closely on the heels of sword & sorcery my favorite genre of pretty much anything is horror.

This new movie Azrael really seems to be checking all the boxes I look for in a horror film as it has a strange society, some deep occult roots, and a haunting creature that is seemingly otherworldly and occult in nature, but could also be something very grounded.

The description goes as follows…

“In a world in which no one speaks, a mysterious, devout community hunts down a young woman named Azrael (Samara Weaving) who has escaped their imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, she is to be sacrificed to pacify an evil which resides deep within the surrounding wilderness – but Azrael will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival. From the seeds of this gritty, relentless parable of sacrifice and salvation, comes an immersive, real-time, action horror tale from the visionary minds of Simon Barrett and E.L. Katz.”

Now The Babysitter on Netflix was a solid 8/10 in my opinion and Ready or Not is easily one of my favorite horror movies of all time and something we regularly watch in the house so I am 100% here for anything with Weaving as the lead — she delivers absolutely phenomenal character-driven moments in an often horrific setting.

Barrett and Katz have also worked on some killer offerings like the Channel Zero show, Temple, and V/H/S/. Channel Zero was a stand out show for me and Temple was a ton of fun and a heck of a mind trip the first watchthrough. I live on Shudder, so all of these are regularly in my feed.

I for one am excited for this and will report back as we learn more!
