This Psalm is also from the time of the restoration under Ezra and Nehemiah. We spent some time on those details in our background study.Psalm 149 is one of the five Psalms that called the “Hallelujah Chorus” with which the writer begins and ends with Halal Yah, which means, literally, “Praise Yahweh.”
6 May the praise of GOD be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands,7 to inflict vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples, 8 to bind their kings with fetters, their nobles with shackles of iron, 9 to carry out the sentence written against them, this is the glory of all HIS faithful people. Praise the LORD.
The word for saints is found 3 times in this short Psalm. The Hebrew word for saints is hasid = saints – faithful ones. This became the name of a particularly strict orthodox Jewish sect hasidic Jews much later than this time of the Psalm.
Historically speaking referring to this Psalm, Israel had suffered defeat, losing everything they held dear, including the ability to worship their GOD and that lead to them many of them forgetting their GOD.
In this Psalm, Israel celebrates in advance two great things, their complete salvation and GOD’s final judgment on the nations who have dared to attack the Kingdom of GOD on earth. Who can blame them? They have already experienced GOD’s salvation, so they praise Yahweh with a new song for the new thing he has done in bringing them back from Exile.
The Jewish monarchy (kings) is gone, destroyed by the pagan Babylon. Now the believers themselves are crowned as GOD’s royal ones, the recipients of GOD’s promise that David will always have an heir on the throne of Israel. The Maker of Israel, their Heavenly King, has replaced their earthly King with the people as a whole.
