Swalwell, like many gun control proponents, wants to ban assault weapons, but he's after way more than that. Sometimes, the things politicians don't say should worry you and it applies to more than guns.

The real intent of many of these politicians, on both sides of the aisle, is in the fine print, and you have to read it carefully.

His exact words are "military-style semiautomatic assault weapons," which could include most common handguns. He wants a mandatory buyback of "weapons" and magazines over ten rounds, and he doesn't use the word rifle.

Here are a few quotes taken directly from his website:

-"Create a national firearm registry," which is illegal under federal law.

-"Create a federal licensing program for gun owners," which would ultimately be an end run around gun registration.

-"Require that liability insurance be purchased before a person can buy or trade a firearm."

-"Prohibit individuals from purchasing more than one handgun per 30-day period."

-"Prohibit individuals from hoarding ammunition in quantities exceeding 200 rounds." That's less than some people use on a typical range day.

- The ability to "sue gun manufacturers" - Are we going to do the same thing for cars and knives because once you start down that road, where does it end? Chicago has already filed lawsuits against car manufacturers, blaming them for the crime.

Swalwell is a lawyer and was a deputy district attorney in Oakland, so he knows how to phrase things to his advantage. He does not use the word rifle in his proposed policies.

As voters, it's important to read the fine print of politicians' proposals. You wouldn't make a significant purchase without doing it, so shouldn't you do the same with who you vote for?
