At the New York premiere of Ryan Murphy’s Halloween entry for FX, a whirling psychological crime thriller starring Niecy Nash-Betts and Courtney B. Vance called “Grotesquerie,” the co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, Dana Walden, made it only one sentence into her introduction before talking up a certain Kansas City Chiefs football star.

“On behalf of everyone at Disney, I really want to welcome you,” Walden said. “We’re so excited about this show, and — I don’t know if you heard this or not — a very special person named Travis Kelce is making his acting debut in this show.”

Walden teased Kelce’s appearance at the premiere before welcoming his emissary instead, mother Donna Kelce. She stood up and gave a wave. Then came introductions of the cast and production.

“Grotesquerie,” which also stars Nicholas Alexander Chavez of Murphy’s “Monsters” and Broadway’s Micaela Diamond, is a murder-thriller kaleidoscope in true Murphy form: brutal gore, crippling social dysfunction, catholicism, psychosexual perversion, a murderer on the loose, indecipherable plotting and one crucial ingredient — irresistible celebrity.

In “Grotesquerie,” Kelce joins the cast as a charming — if not porny — bed nurse. As expected, he was all anybody talked about on Monday evening.

“I mean it would be one thing if he wasn’t a nice guy,” Vance, who is also an executive producer on the show, told Variety. “But really, he’s a nice guy.” According to Vance, Kelce’s casting “just helps us. It helps everybody. Ryan is all about publicity, and he does it better than anyone.”

Murphy gave the audience at Spring Studios on Monday a brief synopsis of the show before screening the show’s third episode, where Kelce first appears.

“There’s this crazy serial killer on the loose,” he began. “Niecy is a detective who doesn’t have time for it anymore. She’s a blackout alcoholic. Meanwhile her husband, Courtney B. Vance, is in a COVID-induced coma, and she doesn’t want him to wake up. He is being attended to by Lesley Manville, who wants power of attorney so she can continue to give him sponge baths. This is all very true,” he chided.

“Chaos ensues when Micaela Diamond shows up,” Murphy continued. “She is a true-crime fanatic nun, who’s covering this case for the local papers. Her boss, played by Nick, is an equally true-crime obsessed priest, who’s also a Peloton instructor on the side. This show has it all.”

Kelce picking up a several episode arc in “Grotesquerie” should come as no surprise to the average Murphy viewer. Celebrity is Murphy’s muse, and fame is more often his subject. Stardom — and the kind of terrifying fandom around Kelce and Taylor Swift — are tools to be used.

“Television moves in weekly increments. Our small bites are like a series of appetizers, psychologically. And so television can bear the traffic of guests,” summed co-creator Jon Robin Baitz, who inked a five-year deal with 20th Television after serving as writer and showrunner on Murphy’s “Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans.”

“Ryan and I were talking a lot while we were making ‘Feud’ about the state of being in the world,” Baitz told Variety about the show’s making. “We just wanted to write something on spec. It was this thing about the zeitgeist, about how dark the zeitgeist was. Post-pandemic terror in the world. Ideas about society breaking apart. We just made a collage of it.”

That gets to the heart of it: Like all things Murphy makes, “Grotesquerie” is only a mirror of ourselves. Murphy casts fame and celebrity like the Romans used bread and circuses. If, this fall, Murphy serves up Kelce as a sexy hospital attendant — then that’s what we’ve earned.

“This was Ryan’s thing, and, well,” Baiz trailed off, “Travis Kelce’s mother is standing right behind me.”

For mother Kelce — who continued her internet celebrity on Monday by peppering the red carpet with answers to questions about Taylor Swift — her son’s turn in a Murphy series doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

“I know he wanted to do this, and I know he can manifest things,” she told Variety. “He has no fear of trying things, and he has no fear of failure.”

Kelce said she was preparing to watch the show for the first time that evening — and offered her son some advice.

“You know, sometimes parents want to fix things for their kids,” she told Variety. “But sometimes it’s better to just let them fail. You learn the most from things you don’t do well. Hopefully, if this is something he wants to do, he’ll get better at it.”
With an intro by Travis Kelce, the official trailer for Ryan Murphy‘s Grotesquerie reveals a gruesome series of crimes and Niecy Nash-Betts’ Detective Lois Tryon on the hunt for the killer.

“Something hellish is going on here,” says Nash-Betts’ Lois at the beginning of the trailer. “This killer is one who knows anatomy, the blood, the DNA that was left there for us to find.”

We also get a glimpse of Courtney B. Vance and Lesley Manville, and hear the first words from Kelce, who ominously states “There is no future after this.”

In the Grotesquerie trailer, Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts), suspects a criminal committing heinous crimes — including the murder of an entire family — is taunting her.

“It’s like God left the keys to the candy store to the devil,” Nash-Betts’ character confesses to a pastor.

As dead bodies populate, a crime-hunting journalist and nun Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond), who has an interest in rituals and cults, requests to help the investigation. Travis Kelce, who is featured introducing the trailer released on Wednesday, says “there’s no future after this,” as the monster continues to wreak havoc.

In the latest Ryan Murphy-directed series, crime sleuths find themselves “ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers,” a synopsis reads. The 10-episode series also stars Courtney B. Vance and Lesley Manville.

NFL star (and boyfriend to Taylor Swift) Kelce said he felt “jabroni” working beside professional actors, in his New Heights podcast, a show he co-hosts with brother Jason Kelce. The series marks Kelce’s first major acting role, which partially explains his early astonishment.

“I was kinda blown away and kinda, like, shocked that he was willing to give me a role like this, because it is a big role on the show,” Kelce said of Murphy. “He seemed very confident that I’d be able to do this and he kinda injected that in me the first conversation that we had. So hopefully I don’t bomb this for him.”

The Emmy winner also reveals who on set was the most starstruck by Kelce, 34, when he joined.

"It was funny because I saw people's reaction to him before I really could take him in. All the guys — these big guys on the set, the grips, transpo — everybody was just fangirling all the way," she remembers. "And I'm like, 'Oh my god, guys!'"

NFL stars aside, playing the role of Detective Lois Tryon in the series was challenging for Nash-Betts, as Lois is not only investigating a "series of heinous crimes" that feel "eerily personal," per the official description — she's also battling addiction.

"In this kind of story, you have to track where she is in her addiction," she says, referring to Lois' battle with alcohol during the series. "Is she hungover? Is she plastered? Is she tipsy? You know what I mean? Does she want to drink but is she trying not to? There's so many places to be in it, and so trying to track that, that was difficult."

Prime Video confirmed earlier this year that Kelce is slated to host its upcoming game show Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?, a spin-off of Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? The series will feature contestants using celebrities to help with 11 elementary-school-level questions as they compete to win $100,000.

After conquering the worlds of football and podcasting, Travis Kelce is gearing up to make his horror debut in Grotesquerie.

The latest trailer for the Ryan Murphy-created series sees the Kansas City Chiefs player teasing his mysterious role in the horror saga that sees Niecy Nash-Betts investigating a bloody crime spree. Kelce provides the intro for the official trailer, promising a couple of "familiar faces." As for the actual footage from the show, the NFL star appears briefly, ominously delivering the line, “There’s no future after this.”

The rest of the trailer is True Detective-esque, centering a series of gruesome deaths that rattle an otherwise quiet small town community. Nash-Betts stars as Lois Tryon, a detective convinced that whoever — or whatever — is responsible for the murders must be taunting her.

“You have to really hate people to do what was done here,” she says after spending time at a crime scene. “It’s inhuman. No. It’s un-human.”

The trailer also features a familiar horror staple: creepy nuns. With nowhere else to turn, Lois accepts the help of Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond), a nun and journalist who — despite witnessing the pits of humanity — still believes in people’s capacity for good. But the further the duo delve, the more tangled they become in an increasingly sinister web.

The series also stars Courtney B. Vance as Lois' husband Marshall Tryon, Lesley Manville as Nurse Redd, Nicholas Alexander Chavez as Father Charlie, and Raven Goodwin as Lois' daughter Merritt Tryon. Details surrounding Kelce’s role are still being kept under wraps.

Niecy Nash-Betts is fending off an "unhuman" evil in Grotesquerie's first official trailer.

Ryan Murphy's new FX series sees Nash-Betts, 54, star as Detective Lois Tryon, who sees the evil plaguing her small town as a signal of "the end of time" — and Travis Kelce agrees.

"Check out the trailer for FX's Grotesquerie," Kelce, who stars in the series as a yet unnamed character, says as he introduces the trailer. "That's right, you might see some familiar faces."

In the trailer, Nash-Betts' character believes that something "hellish is here," and as she joins forces with nun and journalist Sister Megan Duval (Micaela Diamond), the religious and cult-like iconography only grows.

"This killer is someone who knows anatomy. The blood, the DNA — was left there for us to find," Nash-Betts says in the trailer, before telling a priest, "It's like God left the keys to the candy store to the devil."

The mysterious evil that Nash-Betts is investigating "murdered" an "entire family," Sister Megan says as she slides over the local newspaper, which shows that 27 people were killed in a "mass cult death."

Lois calls her "the nun who's a journalist covering crime," and Sister Megan says she's "interested in rituals, cults and their place in American life," signaling that the series will explore themes related to religious rituals and cult behavior.

As she continues investigating, Nash-Betts' daughter, Merritt (Raven Goodwin), tells her that it "seems like this killer is taunting [her]," while Nurse Redd (Lesley Manville) says she's "in an alcoholic's haze."

The case consumes Lois, and Kelce's character warns, "There's no future after this."

Meanwhile, Sister Megan is developing an increasingly erotic relationship with Father Charlie Mayhew (Nicholas Alexander Chavez), as she and the priest talk about looking at "evil" rather than ignoring it, and the priest offers, "And what if you enjoy the looking?"

Lois describes the lingering evil as "the worst thing you could never unsee," before classifying it: "You have to really hate people to do what was done here. It's inhuman. No — it's unhuman."

As the trailer concludes, and a series of mysterious and disturbing images flash across the screen, hinting at the evils to come, Nash-Betts says it's "the end of time," and Nurse Redd eerily admits, "I get a shiver in my quiver just thinking about it."

Per the official description, Grotesquerie sees Lois grappling both with the "heinous crimes" that she feels are "eerily personal" to her and "a strained relationship with her daughter, a husband in long-term hospital care (Courtney B. Vance) and her own inner demons."

As she "fears the world is succumbing to evil, Sister Megan "still believes in [the world's] capacity for good," but as they "string together clues, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers."

Grotesquerie premieres with the first two episodes on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
Grotesquerie trailer unveiled first look at Niecy-Nash Betts and Travis Kelce starrer body horror. The FX series follows Detective Lois Tyron (Nash Betts) discovering an unusual and ‘unhuman’ evil practice plaguing a small town, indicating the “end of time.” Before the trailer starts, Kelce sends a message to the viewers, urging them to find a “familiar face.”

"Check out the trailer for FX's Grotesquerie. That's right, you might see some familiar faces,” he says. The trailer kickstarts with Tyron looking baffled while inspecting a crime scene that featured some grotesquerie, justifying the title. She joins forces with a nun and journalist, Sister Megan Duval (Micaela Diamond), to expose the religious cult.

"This killer is someone who knows anatomy. The blood, the DNA — was left there for us to find," Nash Betts says in the trailer. "It's like God left the keys to the candy store to the devil." The evil described as ‘unhuman’ has murdered an entire family, killing 27 people in the mass cult murder.

At one point, Sister Megan says she’s interested in “rituals, cults and their place in American life," hinting that the series will explore religious material, the possible existence and practice of cults, and other similar themes.

Gradually, Lois is consumed by the case with no sight of it ending! That’s when Kelce’s character comes into the frame, warning her that it’s a suicide mission. “There’s no future after this,” he says with a blank face as if being controlled by some supernatural power.

Meanwhile, Sister Megan is developing an erotic relationship with Father Charlie Mayhew (Nicholas Alexander Chavez), showcasing a side that embraces evil in contrast to Lois, who’s fighting against it.

The priest talks about looking at the evil instead of running away, "And what if you enjoy the looking?" he tells Megan. The series’ official synopsis says, “A detective and a nun investigate a series of heinous crimes that seem personal while grappling with personal issues and uncovering a sinister web that raises more questions than answers.”

Ryan Murphy brings another disturbing horror series, set to be released on Hulu on September 25, 2024.
The rent was due. American Horror Story had become the Kim Kardashian show. His new legal drama, All’s Fair, was also the Kim Kardashian show. Ryan Murphy had one shot and he took it… on Travis Kelce.

Okay, fine—there’s a lot more going on in the new Grotesquerie teaser than the mere presence of the football-guy-turned-acting-guy, but the one clip he’s featured in does stand out a lot amidst the sea of aggressive bisexual lighting and vaguely Satanic imagery that makes up the rest of the preview.

For all intents and purposes, Grotesquerie probably could have been called American Horror Story: Church (The Show Needed A Refresh, But It’s Still Basically The Same), but that title is just a little bit wordy. There is something new going on here, but from this typically evasive Murphy teaser the main split seems to be that he’s traded the cobwebs and general, well, grotesque aesthetic of AHS for neon lights and a whole lot of Christian symbolism. It definitely looks pretty; maybe the Murphy-verse still has some juice after all.

The synopsis for the show reads as follows:

In Ryan Murphy’s 10-episode drama series Grotesquerie for FX, a series of heinous crimes have unsettled a small community. “Detective Lois Tryon” (Niecy Nash-Betts) feels these crimes are eerily personal, as if someone—or something—is taunting her. At home, Lois grapples with a strained relationship with her daughter, a husband in long-term hospital care and her own inner demons. With no leads and unsure of where to turn, she accepts the help of “Sister Megan” (Micaela Diamond), a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian. Sister Megan, with her own difficult past, has seen the worst of humanity, yet she still believes in its capacity for good. Lois, on the other hand, fears the world is succumbing to evil. As Lois and Sister Megan string together clues, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers.

Grotesquerie also stars Courtney B. Vance as Marshall Tryon, Lesley Manville as Nurse Redd, Nicholas Alexander Chavez as Father Charlie, Raven Goodwin as Merritt Tryon, and Travis Kelce as [unnamed]. While every other actor has an assigned character, the tight end is just listed as “Travis Kelce” in the show’s press briefings. He might be Murphy’s spookiest villain yet.

Grotesquerie premieres September 25 on FX, and the next day on Hulu.
