What We Do in Life Echoes in Eternity | How Do We Get Deceived?

What we do in life echoes in eternity—or so we’ve been told. But what if the echoes we hear, the actions we take, and the life we live are all part of a grand deception? How do we get deceived into believing that this world of fleeting moments and fragile bodies is the ultimate reality?

We live in a world of dreams, a carefully constructed illusion that teaches us the opposite of what is true. We see dream figures—bodies of flesh and bone thinking thoughts with a brain, living for brief moments in time, only to die and then disappear forever. This is the story the ego has spun for us, a story of impermanence, a story of a life that ends in oblivion, where each child of God is never to be seen or heard from again. But it’s just that—a story, a dream, a lie we’ve been convinced is the only truth.

The world of dreams is a cunning one. It has us valuing only what we can see, what we can touch, what we can measure. We’re taught to dismiss the divine, the infinite, the timeless. The ego has woven a web of deception so intricate that we forget we’re even dreaming. We accept the dream as reality and lose sight of the truth.

A Course in Miracles says, “Your insane laws were made to guarantee that you would make mistakes, and give them power over you by accepting their results as your just due." This is one way that we get deceived, we are given countless laws that revolve around non-sensical insanity which guarantee that we will make mistakes, and then we are punished for those mistakes. It is one way that we are deceived into letting authority figures have control and power over us as we pay them for the privilege.

The course also teaches that in this world, we are taught to compete and that to conquer another or to win while the other person loses, offers us gain. And so we are deceived by the illusion that loss can offer gain. We are joined, we are one and so whenever one of us loses, we all lose. Loss does not offer gain as the ego and its world teaches. When we instead help each other and all benefit and grow, that is what offers gain. The collective gains and each individual gains.

The ego has mastered the art of deception, convincing us that the world of dreams is all there is. Its time to see the lies for what they are, to reject the false and to choose what is true. The only way to escape this deception is not by analyzing every lie, not by dissecting every illusion the ego presents. The lies are too many, too complex, too layered. Instead, we must dismiss the dream itself entirely. We must see it for what it is—a fleeting illusion, a temporary distraction from the eternal truth that lies beneath.

Awareness of dreaming is the key to awakening. To awaken, we must first become aware that we are dreaming. We must see through the facade, recognize the illusion for what it is, and choose to step beyond it. During this meditation allow yourself to drift into the awareness that there is more to existence than what the ego and its world would have you believe. As you meditate, recognize the divine, the infinite, the timeless that lies just beyond the reach of the senses.
