Las Vegas Police Shoot and Kill Man at The Allister Apartments

An officer shot and killed a man armed with a baseball bat during a response in southeast Las Vegas Friday morning, according to police.

The shooting took place in the 5100 block of Rawhide Street, near Russell Road and Mountain Vista Street.

Officers were called to an apartment complex around 9:10 a.m. on reports of a man who was trying door handles and threatening tenants, said Capt—Kurt McKenzie with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.McKenzie told reporters that the man was uncooperative and used a car as a barrier between him and the officers. After some discussion, the man took a metal baseball bat out of the car's passenger side.

Almost at the same time, the officers deployed a stun gun, but it was ineffective. The man "continued to advance toward officers," according to McKenzie, and they tried a stun gun two more times.

"Simultaneously, an officer discharged his weapon, striking the subject," McKenzie said. "All the ECD (electronic control device) deployments were ineffective."

Officers took the man into custody and rendered aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured in the shooting.

McKenzie said this is LVMPD's ninth officer-involved shooting so far this year.

The name of the officer who opened fire will be released within 48 hours, in keeping with LVMPD's policy on officer shootings, and a full briefing is expected to be held next week.

This is a developing story.The officer who was involved in the shooting with a man armed with a baseball bat has been identified.

Samuel Garcia is 21 years old and has been employed with LVMPD since 2022.

He is currently assigned to the Community Safety Division, Southeast Area Command.

According to officials, he has been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of areview of this incident.
