Bronx, N.Y. — On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., NYPD Officer Cunningham and Officer Emely Liz responded to a residential building in the vicinity of 3rd Avenue and East 135th Street, Bronx, for a 9-1-1 call of a dispute inside of an apartment. When the officers arrived at the apartment, they were met by 24-year-old Alydar Cruz and another person. Police Officer Cunningham and Police Officer Liz interviewed both parties and based on their investigation it was determined that Cruz had assaulted the other person. Police Officer Cunningham conversed with Cruz for several minutes during which time Cruz became increasingly agitated and refused to cooperate with the officers. Following the conversation, Cruz fled into a bedroom and took possession of a machete.

Cruz then emerged from the bedroom with the machete and attempted to swing it at Police Officer Cunningham. As a result, Police Officer Cunningham discharged two shots from his service firearm, and Police Officer Liz deployed her Taser Conducted Electrical Weapon, at Cruz. Cruz was struck by the gunfire and the Taser, and fell to the ground. Cruz was taken into custody without further incident. Cruz was transported from the scene via ambulance to Lincoln Hospital Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries. For his actions, Cruz was arrested and charged with Attempted Aggravated Assault upon a Police Officer, Attempted Assault in the First Degree, Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, Menacing in the Second Degree, Assault in the Third Degree, and related charges.
