Cattle Psychology and Fences (Part 2)
How to be a Ranch Hand
Ever wonder what a cow thinks? So do I sometimes, lol.
In this video I explain what motivates a cow to come off autopilot and want to leave a fenced enclosure. This can help a new guy see the world through a cows eyes when he's building or repairing fences.
I also cover little bit about calves and fences. And a few other things regarding cattle psychology and fences.

In this video I'll show you how a cow thinks. How this thinking affects how a cow interacts and navigates fences and gates on a ranch. Which will also help a new guy interact and navigate how they handle cattle, and how they build and repair fences and gates.

Fence tip: The a-hole knot
How to be a Ranch Hand
I found an a-hole knot today. Thought I’d do a video on it.
Reasons not to do this to tighten fence:
1) It doesn’t last
2) The fence will break easily at this spot
3) Somebody’s gonna have to come back and fix it if it does break
4) There’s a better way to tighten fence that lasts longer
5) Cattle can get out (somebody’s gotta fix that to)

Fence Tip: Livestock Fence Design with Regards to Wildlife
How to be a Ranch Hand
Here I’m showing a barbed wire fence I was going around today and how you can better design your livestock fences to include the use of wildlife.
The 3 main animals that I see have an affect on livestock fences are Antelope, Deer, and Elk.
Antelope go under fences, deer go over, and Elk will go over, or through a fence if they get startled enough.
It’s sometimes easier and more cost effective in some situations to not fence out wildlife, but to design fences to allow wildlife to pass through (sometimes guys want to fence out wildlife in hay meadows, which makes sense, so there are exceptions).
Not making your fences super tall helps deer and elk not take out the top wires. Not making you bottom wires super close to the ground, helps antelope. And in high pressure places where wildlife likes to travel, you can coincide making wires looser, but still look like a barrier to cattle. That way wires are less likely to break.

Fence Tip: Splicing Wires, Big Loops vs Small Loops
How to be a Ranch Hand
In this video, I explain why it’s better to make big loops when splicing wire, vs small loops.
1) Big loops are easier to retighten
2) Less likely to break
3) There’s less pressure on just one spot
God bless!

Fence Tip: Splicing Wire for an Electric Fence
How to be a Ranch Hand
Today I had a good opportunity to go over how I like to splice wire that’s being used for an electric fence.
The knot I like to use is called a figure 8 knot. And this is specifically for smooth metal wire like high tensile (not poly rope or ribbon).
Some take always:
1) always splice electric wire with the same type of wire (so you don’t add extra resistance to the fence)
2) The figure 8 knot doesn’t take out the slack, so you’ll have to tension at a terminal
3) Don’t forget to trim excess on your finished knots
Hope this helps, God bless!

Fence Tip: How to Splice Barbed Wire with Fencing Pliers
How to be a Ranch Hand
In this video I go over how to splice barbed wire using a pair of fencing pliers. This is an essential skill every ranch hand needs to know.
Some take aways:
1) It’s better to use smooth wire to splice with, than another piece of barbed wire
2) If there are multiple strands that need to be spliced, always start at the bottom and work your way up
3) Don’t be afraid to cut out an old splice and just start new
4) If the wire isn’t getting as tight as it should, you may be pulling slack from the wrong end
5) And, this does takes practice and patience to build up the hand strength and muscle memory
Hope this helps, God bless!
