The bobcat, also known as the red lynx, is one of the four extant species within the medium-sized wild cat genus Lynx. Native to North America, it ranges from southern Canada through most of the contiguous United States to Oaxaca in Mexico. They can even leap high enough to catch low-flying birds. Bobcats are excellent climbers and can run up to 30 miles per hour. They stalk their prey with unparalleled patience, and often travel 2 to 7 miles in an evening while hunting and patrolling their territory. The word bobcat is a reference to this stubby appendage. Bobcats are at their most active during the twilight hours. Fully grown bobcats can weigh up to 33 pounds. Bobcats’ solitary hunters by nature lay claim to an area of land that can be anywhere from 1 to 18 square miles in size. They are known for their stealth and patience. Over 200 American high schools call their athletic teams “The Bobcats”. With their elusive nature and striking beauty, bobcats are an iconic species in American wildlife, representing the untamed and mysterious spirit of the wilderness.
