Pastor Paul Bolivar, How To Finish Well: Lessons from King Josiah, 2 Kings 22:1-2, Sunday Evening, 9/22/2024

Outline:

Introduction:

"How do you want to finish?"
- Josiah became king at age 8 during a time of great spiritual decline. (2 Kings 21:9)
- Josiah was the only king who "did that which was right in the sight of the LORD..." (2 Kings 22:2)
- Josiah not only started well but finished faithfully. (2 Kings 23:25)

Main Points:

1. He Discovered God's Word (2 Kings 22:8-10)
A. Finishing well begins by discovering the truth of God. (Psalm 119:105)(2 Timothy 3:16)(Psalm 19:7)
B. God’s Word was hidden but preserved. (Isaiah 40:8)(Psalm 119:89)(1 Peter 1:25)

2. He Allowed God's Word to Transform Him (2 Kings 22:11-13, 16-17)
A. Conviction leads to repentance. (Jeremiah 6:15), (Joel 2:12-13), (Psalm 51:17)
B. Conviction reveals God's imminent judgment. (Romans 6:23), (Hebrews 10:26-27), (2 Corinthians 5:10)
C. Conviction leads us to seek God. (Hebrews 4:12), (James 1:23-25), (Romans 12:2)

3. He Decided to Persevere in Obedience (2 Kings 23:1-3)
A. Josiah made a public covenant to walk after the Lord. (Joshua 24:15), (Psalm 119:34), (James 1:22)
B. Josiah led a national reform, much like J. Frank Norris in Fort Worth, Texas. (Joshua 3:5)

Conclusion:

Josiah finished well because he stayed committed to obedience throughout his life. (2 Timothy 4:7)
