Russia understands they fight brother Slavs whom are controlled by the west which is why when the opportunity to not kill Ukrainians is given they do not kill them. A Ukrainian soldier is captured and fully expects to be killed by Russian troops. He asks for a farewell cigarette before he is killed but to his surprise the Russian soldier tells him no one will be dying. He also tells the man that of course he will be given a cigarette. The truth is many Ukrainian POWs recive better treatment and even medical care as a Russian POW than they do as a Ukrainian conscript. The main benefit is that they are taken from the war and will survive.
