Andries (Dries) Wepener – Tiffy on Ops Hooper / Moduler / Packer REPEAT

This is one of the most compelling and human conversations ever on Legacy Conversations. Dries Wepener grew up in an orphanage. He had a tough childhood and did his national service in the Technical Services Corps as a mechanic (1981-1983). Later he got called up for further Army service, especially during the major armour operations, Ops Hooper / Modular / Packer (1987-1988) taking place in Angola. It was the mechanics that kept the armour and other vehicles going, often with enemy MIG aircraft circling around, looking for them. Without the mechanics, the war would have been lost. They were changing engines, radiators, servicing, fixing vehicles under combat conditions without proper workshops or tools. If you have questions for Dries, please leave them below.
