Between the 1920s and 1949, Georgia Tann ran the Tennessee Children’s Home Society—a front for one of the most notorious child trafficking schemes in U.S. History and you’ve probably never of her.

Tann preyed on poor, single mothers, taking their babies under the guise of state care, then tell you mothers that their child had not survived, though almost 20 are suspected of actually losing their lives.

She would sell these children to the wealthy elite—charging up to $5,000 per child.

Her clients included powerful politicians, prominent East Coast families, and Hollywood stars like Joan Crawford and Lana Turner. In 1941, authorities began to suspect her, but it wasn’t until September 1950 that her empire started to unravel.

An investigation finally exposed crimes that had resulted in as much as a $1,000,000 in profit, but Georgia Tann escaped justice. She passed away of cancer just three days later, on September 15, 1950, before she could be arrested.
