The covid era highlighted the magnitude of influence that the Pharmaceutical Industry has over the medical profession and public health decision-makers. The same applies to the cancer industry.
Cancer is consistently one of the top five causes of death in the Western world. Expensive, patented chemotherapy agents, while improving survival, often come with debilitating side effects, leaving many patients with a reduced quality of life. Elle Macpherson's recent media release described her rejection of "conventional" chemotherapy in favour of a holistic approach. Her story adds to the growing opinions which challenge the accepted paradigm of cancer as a genetic disease. The ‘Warburg Effect' suggests that cancer is in fact a metabolic disease, treatable with off-patent, inexpensive therapies that address cancer metabolism.
Elle Macpherson's story was quickly followed up with an emotive backlash from medical quarters, essentially trying to discredit her decision and claiming that it was ill-advised and unsafe. Patients dealing with the shock of a cancer diagnosis should be free to choose from all treatment options, after being provided with the associated risks and benefits through a process of informed consent. Advice should be evidence-based and unbiased, without coercion by way of free meals, trips and kickbacks, fear tactics, ideally from practitioners with no conflicts of interest other than the desire to help their patients.
Dr Paul Marik's book 'Cancer Care' was recently removed and censored by Amazon.
