Yuri Maltsev, a defector from the USSR, explains that after Stalin dissolved the church so many religious people were deserting to the Germans/Nazis that Stalin reinstituted the Church under the direction of the KGB (now FSB).

Maltsev points out that after the lastt Patriarch Alexy II, an agent of the KGB, died in 2008 he wondered which of the four contenders to replace the Patriarch was the KGB agent. Maltsev contacted some his sources in Russia and was told all four are.

Since 1942 the Russian Orthodox church has never been anything other than a branch of the KGB and in service to the Soviet, or now Russian, state. It is by no means a religious organization.
