Q&A - Sep 20th - Damaged Scopes, Lever Actions, Long Eye Relief, Rails, and More!
Back with another Q&A!
00:00 Introduction
00:24 Marlin 336
“Can it be mounted in a Marlin 336?”
The long scope cannot - unfortunately, the barrel is just too short for the long scope to comfortably fit.
However, the 336 sometimes has holes drilled atop it that can fit the Marlin 94/95 mounting kit (without having the machine the rifle). In that case, the short scopes are pretty easy to toss on top.
01:31 LER Long Range
“Hello.. are any of the long eye relief scopes mounted in scout position.. could be used for higher magnification or long range as well say... 500 plus yards? I've seen all your videos and is still hard to buy scope for the m1a.. thanks a lot.. any opinion will be appreciated..”
The LER can certainly be used for longer distances, but with some constraints.
On one hand, the magnification can be a limiting factor. If you are comfortable with 1X per every hundred yards, then 700 yards would be the limit. More or less magnification per distance would change that maximum.
If you're looking to dial to get the center of the crosshairs on the center of the target, you'd also be limited by the adjustment of the scope and the range you're shooting at. This would take some calculation to figure out, but can also be mitigated with an angled rail.
03:30 Foot Pounds
“21 ft pounds for rail ...50. Your gonna strip”
Fortunately, we're talking about inch-pounds.
15 for the scope, 30-65 for the rail. (It can vary due to the rail materials, fastening nut style, crossbolt thickness, and so on)
05:10 Breaking Scopes
Scopes can be damaged, and possibly even be broken. This is a sad thing when it happens, but is also typically preventable.
Three most common causes for scope damage:
1. Impacts: Scopes aren't meant to be used as hammers, nor are they meant to withstand a solid hammering. They typically don't enjoy being dropped from a great height. Long story short - a hard impact is often not friendly to a scope.
2. Force: If something is 'stuck' in a scope, don't try to force it. If the turret won't turn, don't apply a wrench. Same goes for the magnification dial. Usually, there's an easily remedied issue going on behind the scenes, and forcing the scope will only make things worse.
3. Environment: Scopes are not scuba equipment. Older scopes dislike water even more. Water won't typically destroy a scope, but can make it more difficult to use.
