Psalm 53: The Fool’s Cry Blues

** David wrote Psalm 53 as a contemplation of the folly of denying God's existence and the moral corruption that follows when humanity turns away from Him. This psalm is a reflection on the sinful nature of mankind and the need for divine salvation. The psalm reveals God’s search for those who seek after Him and His ultimate judgment on the wicked. It also carries a message of hope for Israel’s deliverance, calling on God to bring salvation from Zion and restore His people.

Psalm 53 - World English Bible (WEB) Translation
For the Chief Musician. To the tune of “Mahalath.” A contemplation by David.

1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity.
There is no one who does good.

2 God looks down from heaven on the children of men,
to see if there are any who understood,
who seek after God.

3 Every one of them has gone back. They have become filthy together.
There is no one who does good, no, not one.

4 Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge,
who eat up my people as they eat bread,
and don’t call on God?

5 There they were in great fear, where no fear was,
for God has scattered the bones of him who encamps against you.
You have put them to shame,
because God has rejected them.

6 Oh that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion!
When God brings back his people from captivity,
then Jacob shall rejoice,
and Israel shall be glad.

** The Fool’s Cry Blues - Lyrics

(Verse 1)
The fool in his heart says, "Ain’t no God for me,"
Yeah, he says, "Ain’t no God, I’m gonna live wild and free."
But look at the mess, look at the chains he wears,
A soul runnin’ empty, chasin’ shadows and despair.

(Verse 2)
God's eyes are searchin’ the earth, lookin' for just one,
Someone seekin’ His face, someone seekin' the Son.
But man’s gone astray, drownin' in his pride,
Turned away from the truth, got nowhere left to hide.

(Chorus)
Oh, but salvation’s comin' down from Zion’s hill,
Like a river of mercy, flowin' strong and still.
When God brings back the captives, sets ‘em free from sin,
Jacob will rejoice, Israel will rise again.

(Verse 3)
The wicked feed on the broken, like bread in their hand,
They swallow up the needy, never fearin' God’s command.
But don’t they know He sees? He hears their silent cry,
Those who trust in the Lord, they’re never left to die.

(Bridge)
Oh, the bones of the enemy are scattered in the dust,
God’s rejected the proud, brought low their lust.
In their false security, they trembled in fear,
For the Lord has spoken, and His judgment is clear.

(Chorus)
Oh, but salvation’s comin' down from Zion’s hill,
Like a light in the darkness, with unshaken will.
When God frees His people from the shackles they bear,
Jacob will dance, Israel will breathe the free air.

(Verse 4)
They thought they were safe, hidin’ in their lies,
But God split the heavens, He opened up the skies.
Now the fool stands alone, no comfort, no rest,
But the humble find grace in the Lord’s own chest.

(Outro)
Oh, Jacob’s gonna sing, Israel’s gonna shout,
When God brings ‘em home, there’ll be no doubt.
Let the fools turn wise, let the lost come near,
For the Lord’s salvation is drawin’ near.
