Just after midnight on July 4, 2024, when the Yellowstone Interagency Communications Center was informed that a female concession employee was unwillingly held by a man for several hours late July 3.

National Parks law enforcement officers later identified this man as another concession employee, Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner.

Authorities stated Fussner came to the woman’s Canyon Village home armed with a knife and handgun.

The police report for this incident stated that Fussner threatened to kill the woman and carry out mass shootings at the park’s food and beverage area and July 4th events.

Officials said the woman found a secure location and called for help once Fussner left.

NPS officers responded to Yellowstone’s food and beverage area and began searching the area.

Surrounding law enforcement agencies were notified that Fussner was at large, and officers were deployed in spots frequented by park visitors and employees.

More than 20 officers were sweeping the Canyon Village area by the early hours of July 4.

During the search, NPS officers located Fussner’s vehicle in the main Canyon Village parking lot. They located a handgun near the center console in plain sight.

“At 8:05 a.m., Fussner emerged from the woods with a semi-automatic rifle and encountered an NPS law enforcement officer near the Canyon Lodge,” park officials said. Fussner then fired at the officer.

Fussner continued, reportedly firing through the Loading Dock doorway at another officer. That officer allegedly returned fire and struck Fussner.

Fussner was then shot for a second time by another officer. At that point, a third officer approached Fussner and took his rifle. A semi-automatic pistol and multiple magazines for the semi-automatic rifle were also found on Fussner.

Five officers were involved in the pursuit, one who was shot in a lower extremity and transported to a nearby hospital where he was said to be in stable condition.

Despite life-saving efforts provided by medical personnel, Fussner died on the scene.
